Something to be aware of I guess in that part of the world.

Brutal....I have always thought being armed in rural areas where wild animals are, is a very good idea..

Throw the beast (man) in prison. He has no right to end the life of such a gentle creature.

Isn't there a fairly large cougar population in California?

Is this the same guy that was attacked by a cougar in last week's thread? He saved himself with his pocket knife then, too. If I were him, nature hiking might be moved to infrequent events, especially if a cougar drops on his head every time he goes out.

Nope, same story. I plugged it in but didn't see it. Aw well, in case someone missed it.

It is a pocket knife and it is approximately three inches long

That was a question that I didn't see brought up in the other story. Was the knife 3" folded? Did it have one hand opening capability, and did it have a blade lock? The guy did real well.

Sarah Brady is on line one. She says she doesn't recommend carrying a knife in cougar country because there is a 43 to 1 chance that the cougar will just take it away from you and use it against you.

It's illegal to hunt these critters in California! The result being, more and more people are attacked by them; and by golly, if one of them attacks you and you kill it, you'd better be able to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that kitty warranted killing! The only thing that isn't a specially protected species in California is Homo Sapiens!

The other story is exactly the same one as this one, only it was out of the Toronto Star.

We have cougars living around my house here in Oregon.
Of course, if I killed one in self defense, I'd be arrested.;o)

The result being, more and more people are attacked by them...

The sad thing there is these cats tend to attack kids more often than adults and it's highly unlikely they could escape. What they ought to do is have limited hunts every year just to keep the cat honest. He needs to fear man so he'll stay away from them.
