Something to be aware of I guess in that part of the world.

Throw the beast (man) in prison. He has no right to end the life of such a gentle creature.

Is this the same guy that was attacked by a cougar in last week's thread? He saved himself with his pocket knife then, too. If I were him, nature hiking might be moved to infrequent events, especially if a cougar drops on his head every time he goes out.

It is a pocket knife and it is approximately three inches long That was a question that I didn't see brought up in the other story. Was the knife 3" folded? Did it have one hand opening capability, and did it have a blade lock? The guy did real well.

I'd say that cougar bit off more than it could chew!

Sarah Brady is on line one. She says she doesn't recommend carrying a knife in cougar country because there is a 43 to 1 chance that the cougar will just take it away from you and use it against you.

We have cougars living around my house here in Oregon.
Of course, if I killed one in self defense, I'd be arrested.;o)

This guy would have been better served had he been armed with something more lethal and far-reaching than a three inch pocket knife - say, a pistol! Oh, wait,... this is Canada and pistols are banned. Forget I mentioned it!
On second glance, he was armed as well as he could have been without risking a 5 year sentence from Her Majesty's Justice Courts. Looks like he was just out of luck!

When I went kayaking and hiking in an Arizona wilderness a couple of years ago in an area inhabited by mountain lions and wolves (with no weapons on me except a small riverman's knife), I soon learned that the biggest threat to my safety was from the barbed-wire fences which crossed the rivers and trails.
I hear that hungry cougars tend to sneak up behind you and go for your neck, though, so the Canuck in the story was apparently very lucky and very determined to have survived.

Maybe he should have just given it a bear hug.

The blade of the knife was just under 3 inches long. The man was 61 years old.
That's one heck of a tough old man!

I didn't even know John Mellencamp was on tour.
