This guy would have been better served had he been armed with something more lethal and far-reaching than a three inch pocket knife - say, a pistol! Oh, wait,... this is Canada and pistols are banned. Forget I mentioned it!
On second glance, he was armed as well as he could have been without risking a 5 year sentence from Her Majesty's Justice Courts. Looks like he was just out of luck!

Uh, yes, as the ones in urban areas are the most vicious.

Uh, yes, as the ones in urban areas are the most vicious. Specifically the bipeds with opposable thumbs.

Of course, if I killed one in self defense, I'd be arrested Crossbows are quiet. And night-vision equiptment is getting cheaper every year. Should be part of everyone's bag of tricks

Sarah Brady is on line one. She says she doesn't recommend carrying a knife in cougar country because there is a 43 to 1 chance that the cougar will just take it away from you and use it against you. LOL!
Bad kitty!!! Bad - bad - kitty!!
Ban pocket knives! They are a threat to our natural wild life!!
What? There is a road going through this animals territory? Ban all roads now!!!!
I'm glad the guy was "armed" (note to walkers in those woods - ya need a bigger knife!) and won the battle.
Special note to NAGs, NOW, Sierra Comrades, Green Peace, etc.,..."
Beast - 0
Man - 1
Please give me a moment - I feel a compelling urge to get on my roof now and beat my chest whilst yelling - loudly!
I'll be carrying a hatchet from now on - in case one of those Enviro-Nazi brain washed trees attacks me on my next 'conservative' walk through the woods!
I'm sure we will hear the tripe about how this was his fault. Can't wait to see the spin.

"...night-vision equiptment ..."Hey! I have one of those! But, I used it for two-legged critters.
I had some former painters who were unhappy with their compensation from the builder...
they thought they would make up any losses with stuff from my house.
Their interest wained after I told them about my gun...

When I went kayaking and hiking in an Arizona wilderness a couple of years ago in an area inhabited by mountain lions and wolves (with no weapons on me except a small riverman's knife), I soon learned that the biggest threat to my safety was from the barbed-wire fences which crossed the rivers and trails.
I hear that hungry cougars tend to sneak up behind you and go for your neck, though, so the Canuck in the story was apparently very lucky and very determined to have survived.

IF it were found out....

By far, the greatest danger to people in remote areas are predatory humans.

heheh...well, it could have been suicide.;o)

Maybe he should have just given it a bear hug.
To: Terriergal
Shame on him, killing a wild animal like that.
To: Tennessee_Bob
My thoughts exactly.
To: Tennessee_Bob
The poor thing was probably just hungry. He should be feeding those poor wild cats that are too old or sick to maintain their own hunting territory and hunt regular wild prey anymore. Ya know? If he had *any* compassion at all, that is.
scuse me while I go retch...

The blade of the knife was just under 3 inches long. The man was 61 years old.
That's one heck of a tough old man!

Remember a couple months back when the wannabe cougar hugging environazi said that he (or she) couldn't imagine a better way to go?
To: LibKill
That's one heck of a tough old man! At 61 I'd have to agree. Probably felt a rush of adrenaline that gave him the strength he needed at the last moment.
To: Terriergal
,,, walking in the woods with a knife? Clearly, that's intent.
To: shaggy eel
Concealing a deadly weapon, at the very least. The man should never again be allowed to own a gun... or a knife!
