The former president of the 16-million-member Southern Baptist Convention, told the pre-convention pastors conference in St. Louis last week:

Islam was founded by a demon-possessed pedophile who had 12 wives – and his last one was a 9-year-old girl.

That, and the Rev. Jerry Vines, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Jacksonville, Florida's further statement: "Allah is not Jehovah either. Jehovah's not gonna turn you into a terrorist that'll try to bomb people and take the lives of thousands and thousands of people."

This evoked furious reactions:

The only problem with all this sound and fury is that Islam's own "Hadith" (the sayings of Muhammad) in Volume 7, Book 62, reports that Muhammad married Aisha at age 6, and when she was 9-years-old, he consummated their marriage.

"We don't understand why this is a controversy," Dr. Ergun Caner told the Dallas Morning News. "This is something you have in Hadith; this is something in Islam's teaching – something we were taught as children." Dr. Caner, who was born a Muslim, is on the faculty of Criswell College in Dallas. With his brother, Dr. Emir Fethi Caner, who teaches at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, N.C., he has written the book, "Unveiling Islam: An Insider's Look at Muslim Life and Beliefs."

In Dallas, Dr. Caner said: "Muhammad himself questioned whether he was demon-possessed."

But Dallas Morning News reporter Berta Delgado wrote: "Some Muslims say the young bride in question was actually 16 when she was betrothed, 18 when she married the prophet."

But this reporter provided no identity for any of those she listed as "some Muslims."

The book "Unveiling Islam" is now going into its fourth printing. Dr. Caner of Wake Forest told me: "Muhammad personally led 83 military expeditions. And he ordered: If a Muslim changes his religion, kill him."

Thirty-seven years ago, the leader of the International Council for Philosophy and Humanistic Studies of the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization, Dr. Nedg Mond Dine Bammate, wrote the following for the "Muhammad" biographical entry in the 1965 Encyclopedia Britannica:

Western critics have often reproached Muhammad for his own polygamy. As long as (his first wife) Khadija, who was many years older was alive, Muhammad remained unswervingly loyal to her. Among his later wives, there were two of whom he seems to have been especially fond – Aisha, his favorite, whom he married as a very young girl.

Now, Dr. William Montgomery Ward, professor of Arabic and Islamic studies at the University of Edenburg, writes that in the year 624, Mohammed "was already married to Aisha."

Since Aisha was born in Mecca in 614, this means that she was no more than 10 years old, and probably younger, when Muhammad married her as his third – and according to her biography in the 2002 Encyclopedia – "most favored wife."

This is the same Abe Foxman who is perpetually tarnished by his role in the Clinton pardon of fugitive Marc Rich, including the providing the idea of sending Rich's hugely buxom ex-wife on regular visits to the Clinton White House to "carry the message." Now he shows how liberal Jews are more afraid of conservative Christians who are on the side of Israel than they are of muslims, who following the dictates of their Koran, hate and murder Jews.

Muhammed was not only a pedophile, but a murderer, a liar and a thief. How he ever founded a major religion is beyond me.

The Baptists may be provocative-- but at its heart, recognizing the threat Islam represents to other cultures and societies would appear to give the Preacher some street credibility. Too bad the Preacher doesn't realize political correctness forbids airing of these truths.

As a conservative Jew, believe me, you cannot be as frustrated as me with the institutionalized Liberal Jews.

I believe Jews who continue to support the Democratic party invite anihilation of our faith. The Talmud does not support the principles underpinning the planks of the Democratic party. Homosexuality, Pro-Abortion and limiting the right to defend ourselves are not part and parcell of our religion. The recent reformation in Judaism over the last century has diluted and misrepresented our identity as a culture. Liberal Jews cringe at the mentioning of "Family Values", yet it is precisely these Values which will help to preserve Judaism for our descendants. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Islam was founded by a demon-possessed

Some fundamentalists seem to see a demon around every corner.

Unfortunately this is true in most Western Churches, the priest scandal, mainstream Protestantism is a joke, Evangelicalism is primarily concerned with numbers and keeping people entertained instead of challenged.

And with no moral fiber, no fire in our hearts, we have to face a fanatical determined foe. Scary stuff. Thank God for the few people, like the Southern Baptists who are speaking out.

How he ever founded a major religion is beyond me.

Given the innate nature of those who follow him, are you really surprised?

It appears to be more a cult than a religion.

They're easy to find in Israel. Just look for the ones with bombs strapped on. And don't knock the Southern Baptists, this guy told the truth.

Some fundamentalists seem to see a demon around every corner.

And if you read your Bible, Jesus was quite a fundamentalist by your reasoning. He spent a lot of time casting demons out.

I am still waiting for the text that suggests that Mohammad consummated his marriage with his "wife" at 9 years of age.

A scumabag to the core. A perfect role model for a religion for scumbags.

Yeah, but Jesus didn't go around casting out fictional movie characters or the tooth fairy. BTW, Jesus was also a Jew, not a Fundamentalist non-denominational Christian.

Check out this link; it is a translation of the Sahih Bukhari. Here is the main page, then specifically, Wedlock and Marriage. Scroll down to number 64 for the quote cited below. Make sure you read the introduction, because it lays out how valuable Muslims regard this collection of hadith to be - it is considered "second to none."

Volume 7, Book 62, Number 64: Narrated 'Aisha: that the Prophet married her when she was six years old and he consummated his marriage when she was nine years old, and then she remained with him for nine years (i.e., till his death).
