South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem (R), who has been under the microscope this week for an anecdote about killing her dog, defended her actions Wednesday, saying she shot the “dangerous” pup in order to protect her children.
“It was a dog that was extremely dangerous,” Noem said Wednesday on Fox News’s “Hannity.” “It had come to us from a family who had found her way too aggressive.”
“We were her second chance. And she was — the day she was put down was a day that she massacred livestock that were part of our neighbors,” she continued. “She attacked me. And it was a hard decision.”
Noem added that she had to make a choice between “keeping my small children and other people safe, or a dangerous animal, and I chose the safety of my children.”

“If farmers took all animals they own, which need to be put down, they would soon be out of business.”
A friend of mine owns 3,000 sheep. He told me he has sheep die just about daily...sometimes from loose dogs disemboweling them! So no, he doesn’t worry about killing an animal. Even a “puppy”.

I helped a cop do so. The dog was loose, hit by a car and dying slowly. I held it as the cop shot it in the head. Instant death. The 38 didn’t even come out the other side!
About 20 years ago, I took a dog to the pound to have it killed. Raised it from a puppy. I’ve had at least one dog my entire life and usually 2. This sucker was mean. Our granddaughter was about to move in with us for a year and I figured one of them was going to die. Bye-bye dog! If shooting a gun in my yard had been legal, I’d have shot it in the head. And slept well at night.
Under what circumstances did the FIL strike the dog with his SUV?
Did the FIL drive onto your property? Or, did the dog get out of the yard?
The neighbors should have taken care of that psycho. I hope he got what he deserved in Vietnam.
Technically, our dog was on our property. We have an empty field adjoining our yard and our property ends beside their garage. We have always allowed them to use their vehicles on our property.
Our Blue Heeler and his mother, a Golden Retriever, were playing in our field near their garage when it happened.
I don’t place blame on the father in law because they were playing close to his vehicle, even though it was our property. I just believe that he should have at least expressed some condolences. We would have been polite and nice, because he didn’t do it on purpose.
If I accidentally struck someone’s pet, I would call and apologize.
I agree, she isn’t evil. She handled the situation in the wrong way.
I understand about your kittens because we have a Maine Coon. He always dominated our dogs:)
She’s not evil just a farmer doing her thing. I would not however, have published the story in a book.
No argument about killing. The difference is between taking it out back and shooting it in the head for following its instincts or just rough play and putting it to sleep because it will probably continue destroying valuable property. They don’t know any better on their own so if they’re broken, there’s not much choice. However, calling them “vicious”, especially after saying it was hated for not hunting, is most likely deflection and CYA from the shooter who needs votes.
If conservatives were just 1/10th as passionate about Christian rights as there are about a rancher right to shoot his dog, this would be a great nation.
Is your field fenced in?
That’s what I recall. Although larger dogs aren’t considered fully mature until 24 months, puppy is hardly the word I’d use. It was just a young dog, and, sadly, it sounded like a risky one.
I’ve been present at the euthanizing of two of my dogs. One went well, the other one didn’t. The injections aren’t always kind.
“Psychos” such as that are the reason you can spew the crap you spew without getting a bullet in the back of the head. But fools fail to understand that don’t they?
Nope. We’ve not had to ‘take matters into our own hands.’ Our dogs have turned out pretty good so far. I mean, we don’t run a puppy mill or anything - just breed every few years for our own use and for our circle of hunting friends. Plott Hounds and Treeing Walker Coon Hounds. We currently have one Nite Champion on deck for raccoon. This is a ‘rebuilding season’ for the bear hunting dogs - you don’t win awards for that for some reason. Our best and oldest dogs have peacefully passed in the past few years. I recently lost my Beagle to Old Age. I’m not happy about that in the least! His passing reminds me that I am mortal! ;)
We are expecting a PLANNED litter in a few weeks from one of our Treeing Walker Coon Hounds. She is HUGE - I fear for the number of pups she’s going to put out! She is an amazing Bear dog (Beau hunts Black Bear) and the sire is also an amazing Bear dog, so we have high hopes for this litter.
We DO have two sisters from the same litter that WILL mix it up if they’re allowed anywhere near one another, though. But that’s just Sisters. ;)
Our dogs live like Kings. We’d starve before they would be even SLIGHTLY inconvenienced in any way. :)
That’s a good point. But, still dumb either way. WHY publish that? I just don’t get it.

Might of ate the liver...😐 I didn’t ask but my family lived in Thailand a while in the 60’s growing up so I was kind of conditioned to weird stuff.

I know someone who did it. But I just desensitize my dogs. Depending on the dog a couple of days to a couple of weeks. After awhile they just ignore the chickens. You have to put a little effort into it which apparently Kristi just didn’t care to do.
