As Columbia University President Dr. Nemat "Minouche" Shafik faces scrutiny from ongoing campus protests over Israel’s war with Hamas, a more than 20-year-old video is getting renewed attention for remarks on the causes of terrorism.
The video, filmed just two months after 9/11, shows Shafik – who was then vice president at the World Bank – discussing the economic roots of terrorism with UC Berkeley’s Harry Kreisler on the program, "Conversations with History."
Shafik argued that although terrorism has sprung up in "fairly rich and open societies," its most fertile ground is in countries beset by "economic stagnation and political authoritarianism."

An Egyptian-born Muslim Ivy League university president supports terrorism. What is surprise.
“Full stop”? Now everyone is a pilot apparently.
You are leaving out the important part: She is a member of the House of Lords.
I assume your referring to her life peerage in the UK that entitles her to sit in the now purely ceremonial house of lords? That is a silly objection. I would focus on her support of terrorism as the more likely avenue for condemnation.
Not good enough. She needs to condemn Hamas specifically and the Hamas terrorist supporting jerks in tents supporting them and then expel the jerks if they don’t remove themselves in one hour. Keep the rest of their tuition after they are escorted off campus
Two-faced bitch.
All they have to do is adopt the open society, governance and economic model of Israel and they would no longer bet "beset by economic stagnation and political authoritarianism."
Yesterday, I saw an astounding interview on Twix of the son of one of the founders of Hamas who said exactly that.
Too late.
She said it.
Back in Jr. High or high school I figured terrorism was acceptable as a means of fighting - using the limited resources that one had.
I think I probably confused it with guerilla fighting - where one is attacking a military force, and not raping women and burning babies or flying airplanes with citizens into office buildings.
Yes, there’s a world of difference.
Terrorism is inflicting chaos, anarchy, and terror though destruction, torture, and murder for the sake of it.
The alums should raise up as one and get her ass thrown out immediately. If not sooner.
And ——Another commie Ivy League College Pres needs to resign. This time for promoting terrorism.
Wow. Never thought I would see this craziness in America. Stuff for the history books.
The history books about the decline and end of the Republic.
Well, isn’t everyone reassured? I mean, come on, she said “full stop”! She MUST really be opposed to terrorism. Did she follow it up with, “I love the Jews too, full stop!”?
Columbia is NYC and not America
and robbery is a financial transaction and rape is a social engagement... right???
I learned at Columbia four decades ago that the point of terrorism is to get authorities to either overreact or under-react. if authorities overreact—then they prove the terrorist’s point—that the authorities are fascists.(and therefor deserving of being taken down) but if they under-react—then the authorities are weak. (and therefor deserving of being taken down.)
Heads I win, tails you lose.
Go to the Columbia Prez’ Wikipedia info to view an earlier picture of her meeting with Obama and Christine Lagarde. Speaks volumes, doesn’t it.
