OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- Protesters are causing major traffic issues across the Bay Area, including in Oakland and on the Golden Gate Bridge, as part of a worldwide economic blockade in solidarity with Palestine.
The first protest Monday morning happened on northbound I-880 in Oakland at 5th Ave., where Protesters brought barrels filled with concrete onto the highway and chained themselves to the barrels. Law enforcement had to cut through the barrels before they could arrest the protesters. Only one lane has been opened.
Southbound I-880 has also closed as hundreds of protesters made their way onto the highway with banners. This is at 7th St. in West Oakland. CHP says only one person has been arrested so far.
Protesters have also blocked all lanes in the southbound direction of the Golden Gate Bridge. It is now backed up for miles into Marin. As of 10:30 a.m., protesters were beginning to be arrested on the Golden Gate Bridge.
Organizers say these protests are a part of A15, a worldwide economic blockade in solidarity with Palestine and calling for an arms embargo and an end to US taxpayer funding for Israel. Monday is the tax deadline for most Americans.
The Oakland Economic Blockade Against Palestinian Genocide says they are protesting alongside 56 cities around the world.
Protests have blocked traffic in other major cities Monday morning, including Chicago at O'Hare Airport.
In November, protesters calling for a cease-fire in Gaza shut down the Bay Bridge during the APEC Summit.
In total 78 people were charged, but a case against these protesters has been dismissed.
Instead, the protesters accepted a diversion agreement, where they'll each have to do five hours of community service, and the group as a whole will pay about $4,500 in restitution.
It’s an election year. The dims’ rent a mobs are going to raise hell this year.
Yeah this will really make people sympathetic to your side. /s
These will be the same people causing havoc before the 2024 election.
Novel by Ayn Rand protege and lifelong friend and lawyer the late Erika Holzer Eye For An Eye:
“We’re kind of sticklers for justice since you can’t count on the system to provide it.”
It will be amusing to see how Biden tries to appease both sides.
The Dem Convention is CHICAGO will be a hoot!... Just like 1968!.........Deja Vu all over again!...............
The news guy on ABC7 made sure that viewers knew that this was a result of people starving in Gaza.
Just use forklifts to drop the barrels over the rail of the bridge. The protestors can go along with the barrels or not, makes no difference to me.
Low grade terrorism, with an implicit threat of more violence.
We do not need these people in my country, and I don't mean Israel.
How is this stuff supposed to get people to support them?
Making hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of people late for work and missing pay or having to use their sick leave or Personal Time Off?
I would be mad as hell at them! Pissing people off is not a good PR strategy.................
The fact is that if a non-cop even touches one of these pukes, that person will be arrested.
Yeah that was when we had a republican mayor......now we have a lib SJW that loves to virtue signal
How about pushing the barrels filled with concrete off the bridge. With them still chained to them.
Shove the barrel of concrete off the bridge. If an economic terrorist is chained to it, so much the better.
If the police weren’t protecting the ‘protestors’, this would have been resolved hours ago.
It might harm an endangered fish..................
I would pull my car up as close as possible and just lay on the horn...........................
True. Glad I don’t live in CA, but there’s no telling when the idiots will start that stuff around here.
Did I ever tell you the story of pouring a jug of floor cleaner over a Jacksonville cop’s head?...................
Pro Iran, ultimately.
Arrest and deport them...
