Kari Lake makes calls to legislators in push for repeal of Arizona abortion ban she previously backed

Senate candidate Kari Lake has made calls to state lawmakers to push for the repeal of Arizona's Civil War-era abortion ban, according to a Republican legislator who spoke about receiving a call from her.

The GOP-controlled Legislature is considering its next steps after the state Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that the state's 1864 near-total ban on abortion is enforceable. The Arizona House convenes again Wednesday.

Lake's campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday evening on her lobbying of state lawmakers.

Lake, who has said she opposes the court's ruling, is among the many Arizona Republicans who have scrambled to distance themselves from the 19th century statute, despite having previously voiced support for it. Democratic Senate candidate Ruben Gallego has highlighted Lake's earlier comments about the ban.

Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs, who has urged the Legislature to repeal the law, said Thursday that calling a special session would not be useful now because “the votes obviously are not there.”

Hobbs said she is in discussion with Republican lawmakers and leadership to repeal the ban but declined to name any legislators.

Republicans in Arizona hold slim majorities in both chambers — a 31-28 advantage in the House and a 16-14 seat advantage in the Senate.

DeSantis sided with Democrats and against pro lifers who wanted a total ban.

Another illogical, failed analogy, in your support of Lake’s pro-abortion flip flop. DeSantis was signing into law something presented to him by his legislature, that was very anti-abortion, arguably the most anti-abortion legislation of any state. It was a very positive step in the RIGHT, PRO-LIFE direction.

Similarly, in Arizona, the courts released a ruling that was very anti-abortion, bringing Arizona closer in line to where Florida now is. It is a very positive step in the RIGHT, PRO-LIFE direction in Arizona, following Florida’s lead.

Yet here comes Lake, trying to block it in Arizona. She wants to move everything back into the WRONG, ANTI-LIFE direction. And here you are, just about her biggest defender on this board in helping her with that disgusting effort.

Posted this yesterday. My take on what is happening in AZ. I'm 100% for LIFE. This has been a set-up. My opinion.

+++++++++++

This whole decision in Arizona has distinct similarities to the leaked plan to overturn Roe v. Wade by the USSC. Both of these “issues” are serving as a clarion call to all of the brain dead to vote for - wait for it - “reproductive health care”.

My ass. This is a planned news story / event to help the donkeys and the repukes are too stupid to see it for what it is.

Not true. Limbaugh used to talk about the lack of unity and message among democrats.

Not true. Limbaugh used to talk about the lack of unity and message among democrats.

Not when election season rolls around. Their voters vote in lockstep. Also, not when Democrat elected officials vote. They too vote in lockstep according to what their Leader orders them to do.

Yes, they bicker occasionally the rest of the time, but not when it's time to vote.

I hate political triangulation.
State your position and why you feel that way. You’re supposedly a leader so be convincing and sway as many as you can to your position.
Let people vote for their leaders based on their policy positions and character.
Leaders and representatives need to vote and speak according to their principles. Not this triangulation crap.

Because he’s not a conservative or pro-life, and wants to be able to blames something other than his own ineptitude for losing his election, and picking a bunch of losers in 2022.

Meanwhile, principled pro-life candidates won elections in 2020 and 2022.

Yeah, because we should instead hope that nobody ever hears what a candidate is pushing, so people can be ignorant and vote the way they are told.

We are already likely to lose the state because we had to pick Kari Lake who has yet to win anything, but we were told that losing elections was the price you pay for not sacrificing your principles.

Now we are supposed to sacrifice our principles. Which we could have done with a Republican candidate who would easily win the senate seat.

You cannot make change if your not in power. Not a single piece of AZ Legislation has gotten by Hobbs since she became Gov. The left is going to ride this abortion issue all the way to the bank. Even Kansas voted overwhelmingly to have unhindered abortion rights. What do you think purple AZ will do? You can say Stanne has no principles, but the problem remains. We can’t just wish in one hand and sh.. in the other. There are too many other important issues to deal with - Border, Economy, potential Wars, etc. for us to be permanently sidelined. I’m sure you can see the point. How would you go about it if you were Kari Lake?

You are correct.

Full text of law

“A person who provides, supplies or administers to a pregnant woman, or procures such woman to take any medicine, drugs or substance, or uses or employs any instrument or other means whatever, with intent thereby to procure the miscarriage of such woman, unless it is necessary to save her life, shall be punished by imprisonment in the state prison for not less than two years nor more than five years.”

The media spin has been “Arizona's draconian and absolute ban on abortion” .

I should have known better than to believe anything coming from the minsters of propaganda , especially for an issue like abortion and actually read was on it's face is a well drafted and comparatively reasonable piece of legislation.

That said, I'm totally in favor of anything Kari Lake feels she needs to do to position herself to beat Ruben Gallego, who is as radical as they come on abortion and many other issues, on the abortion issue.

Her position may be cynically calculated politics but moral purity on the issue is a losing battle in today's political arena even in once proud Arizona . If we do not win the Presidency and the Senate in 2024 we have lost our country and we will see things like women conceiving children to get paid to have them aborted and sold for fetal research or even child sacrifice.

This is not conjecture - both of these things are actually happening below the radar screen and the radical abortion activists are trying to mainstream things like the sale of aborted fetal tissue of even third trimester babies.

You’re making my point for me.
If the people want abortion we haven’t been convincing enough that the life of the unborn is precious. If we are forced to go against our values in order to win elections that means we have lost the debate that really matters.

Sure, only a little murder is ok then. Btw how’s the GOP on principles in general. Didn’t they just pass FISA? A faithless party.

“ If Ruben Gallego beats Kari Lake in senate race, he promises to end the Senate Filibuster rule and pack the Supreme Court.

He also wants to outlaw the AR-15.”

You voting for him?

You want lake to run a separate prolife campaign with this guy and all the backing of the federal election and the pro abortion Arizonans to rout her?

You think she can turn all the Arizonans pro life by November ?

You think it’s a hill to die on and give up the country to a tyranny?

It already catapulted them to victory once. Defending abortion has been a mainstay of AZ politics for the Dems and we’re losing our border and public safety as a result.

Yeah, because we should instead hope that nobody ever hears what a candidate is pushing, so people can be ignorant and vote the way they are told.

If they are dumb enough to throw the baby out with the bathwater than anything that makes them vote sensibly is fine by me.

The main reason for voting for them? They aren't a Democrat Nazi.

DeSantis was signing into law something presented to him...

And Lake is presented with a situation that you don't understand.

There was an existing 15 week law in AZ. Four RINO Ducey judges are purposely ignoring that law and instead ruling in favor of a much older law knowing full well that this will lead to referendum in Nov. that will bring more abortionists to the polls, more Democrat votes, more Democrats and ultimately more abortions of babies.

Ignorance like yours will lead to more abortions.
