Kari Lake makes calls to legislators in push for repeal of Arizona abortion ban she previously backed

Senate candidate Kari Lake has made calls to state lawmakers to push for the repeal of Arizona's Civil War-era abortion ban, according to a Republican legislator who spoke about receiving a call from her.

The GOP-controlled Legislature is considering its next steps after the state Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that the state's 1864 near-total ban on abortion is enforceable. The Arizona House convenes again Wednesday.

Lake's campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday evening on her lobbying of state lawmakers.

Lake, who has said she opposes the court's ruling, is among the many Arizona Republicans who have scrambled to distance themselves from the 19th century statute, despite having previously voiced support for it. Democratic Senate candidate Ruben Gallego has highlighted Lake's earlier comments about the ban.

Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs, who has urged the Legislature to repeal the law, said Thursday that calling a special session would not be useful now because “the votes obviously are not there.”

Hobbs said she is in discussion with Republican lawmakers and leadership to repeal the ban but declined to name any legislators.

Republicans in Arizona hold slim majorities in both chambers — a 31-28 advantage in the House and a 16-14 seat advantage in the Senate.

There was a time when flip flopping was seen as something not good. Now we’re championing it?

Not championing it, just ignoring it because the focus on it is enemy action.

Democrats never attack fellow Democrats. That is a Republican only level of idiocy.

What good is political power, if you’ve already conceded and abandoned your core issues and beliefs in order to gain power?

My core issue is making certain my family can survive the attempt by Fascists to control our government.

What is your core issue?

You wanna be pro-life? Make sure the fascists don't take over. Fascists kill hundreds of millions of people.

“People are communists.”

That’s absurd.

As to the rest of your post, what exactly do you mean?

Should conservative voters give political leaders (e.g., Trump and Lake) a pass because pro-life positions are unpopular?

Yes I did. Your failed attempt at equating Lake and DeSantis on abortion positions is completely illogical, as they are clearly diametrically opposed in general.

Lake said she would support 15 weeks. That's the same amount of time that DeSantis supports. Do you understand that? Yet you support the one politician while you tear down the other. Your hypocrisy is noted.

It shows you care little to nothing about the actual issue, or principle, and care only about the personalities involved.

My pro life record is 50 years long. You are lying. And let the record show, that you support a candidate, DeSantis, who compromises on principle, and signed into law a bill that does allow abortion before 15 weeks.

Yes, and that includes the millions of babies that the facists/communists/tyrants will abort.

No they should vote them in because their actions are those of pro life
Why do you look at government to solve cultural problems/be in charge of culture and think you’re not communist

We the people are in charge. The people want abortion pay attention

Kari Lake said no such thing.

What she did say is that the 1864 Arizona Law goes too far and she is arguably correct on this

The Az law is a total and absolute complete ban on abortions. There are no exemptions for rape, incest, health of mother or child which is draconian in our modern times. It reflects literally Civil War era medical knowledge and technology

Kari Lake said that the law should be updated and it’s Az Gov Katie Hobbs responsibility to sort things out with the Az legislature since abortion is now a state law jurisdiction and she , Kari Lake, is running for Federal office

Kind of a calculated political punt but it’s a smart political play for the world we live in.

Kari has been an anti abortion person working in a media world that is overwhelmingly filled with hyper partisan abortion activists for a long time so it’s not like she just moved over to the dark side. She knows how to navigate these troubled waters.

On the other hand - her opponent Ruben Gallego is totally on board with Biden’s abortion on demand until the moment of birth and probably a bit after so he is a total radical on abortion

My core issue is making certain my family can survive the attempt by Fascists to control our government. What is your core issue?

My core issue also involves personal survival, of myself, and my family. And as I believe some of us have suffered severe injury due to the phony vax, that all of our elected officials and their various agencies were insisting we take, I see trying to prevent another catastrophe of that sort happening again, to include gain of function research, as the number one imminent danger we face.

You wanna be pro-life? Make sure the fascists don't take over. Fascists kill hundreds of millions of people.

Totally different issue than abortion, which has killed hundreds of millions of people itself alone the last 75 years, and is killing countless more every day. The fact that socialist Europe countries have better anti-abortion policies than most US states shows exactly how horrible we are as a people on the issue.

OK, I now understand. (I think.)

1. The Republican Party has consistently endorsed limiting access to birth control for years. That might be many things but one of those things isn’t Communist.

2. You cheapen the word “communist” is you apply it as a catch-all for all government infringements on individual rights. The legislators and courts who created easement rights for phone and utility companies limited individual rights could scarcely be called communist even if you disagreed with them. Nor could the Southern states that legislated and enforced Jim Crow laws that restricted the rights of black citizens.

Communist does not equal Authoritarian or Restrictive.

Lake said she would support 15 weeks.

Who cares what she said, at one time or another. The obvious point is, she is now siding with Democrats to block a new court ruling that was very pro-life. Period. Yes, we can get into the specific numbers of the ruling, which don't reflect well on her either. But the fact she is opposing a pro-life ruling, at all, is the tell. She can't be trusted on the issue. Your failed analogies trying to tie DeSantis to such despicable behavior are outrageous, and amateurish.

“ Should conservative voters give political leaders (e.g., Trump and Lake) a pass because pro-life positions are unpopular?”

What is your plan?

You’re going to run?

You know someone to run that’s going to win, that’s going to be more pro life than both of these two? Who is it?

You’re going to not vote stamping your feet?

Even the Catholic literature says don’t not vote, vote for the most pro life.

Ah hah!

So you’re suggesting that politicians tailor their positions based on electability?

What’ve I’ve said is that your nuanced approach has been anathema to the MAGA base of this party which deems any divergence from the Straight and True to be a RINO betrayal.

I am not cheapening the term communist

At at all. Read. Get acquainted with history and reality

The mani fest o

This country will be full communist in less than four years if the Dems/communists retain power. That would be because people are not backing the only people willing and able to get to the power structure forcing that. Trump and Kari Lake. Two or themree others. No more.

Right! #EarnMyProlifeVote. Hey Kari are you one of those mothers that would choose your health over your baby’s life??????
To those of you who are mothers, have mothers: what kind of mother would not give her life for her baby’s chance to live?

I have seen it claimed that abortion is carrying them to victory.

I have seen no raw data.

Stop talking about it, unless you want to backstab Trump.

Authoritarian actions were part of American (and British) history long preceding Marx. I’ve read the Manifesto and can attest that our capitalist system has sometimes enforced personal restrictions quite independent of communism. Surely you don’t believe that Jim Crow laws were communist?

I am not looking to pursue an argument with you. I am merely pointing to the absurdity of promoting an ideological litmus to test to Republicans. In the case of abortion Trump and Lake are advocating a position that is heretical to the purists within the party.

The 1864 law has an exception for the Life of the mother.

Kari wants the 15 week law to remain.
