Top House Republican prepares end-run around Speaker Johnson on Ukraine aid

A top House Republican lawmaker is preparing to circumvent Speaker Mike Johnson, R– La., to force a vote on a bill related to Ukraine aid and U.S. border security.

Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick, R-Pa., co-chair of the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus, said that he was preparing the legislative maneuver as a fail-safe in the event Johnson does not bring a Ukraine aid bill to the floor.

"It’s existential, it’s time-sensitive. Whether it’s our [bill] or somebody else’s, we’ve just got to get the money out the door," Fitzpatrick told reporters on Thursday morning.

Well, that was a really stupid thing to say, because it's incomplete.

The situation actually is, if we really want to stop Pooty:

we’ve just got to get the WEAPONS out the door, and at the same time pay for newer and better weapons to replace them."

Seriously, why not restrict the aid to weapons, mostly larger systems, and perhaps a couple billion dollars in humanitarian materials? The Euro's can pick up the financial aid - after all, their total support for Ukraine is far ahead of the US, to date.

Had the Senate passed or at least amended HR2 months ago

...it would have little to no effect. Biden would just subvert it, and the Pubbies would look like idiots.

My vote on all this is NO. No to money for Ukraine. No to supposed money for the border (because they wouldn’t stop illegals, anyway), and No to a pittance for Israel just so it can help hide the bulk for Ukraine. NO to all of it.

Ukraine is ‘winning’ anyway, isn’t it? What they need us for?

OK. So whatever. Swim upside down in the fish tank. Go live in the backwoods off the grid.

It would have had the effect that there would have been a new legislative policy on the border, so Congress could have conditioned aid to Ukraine on Biden stopping the BS games and implement this new policy that he himself signed into law.

Instead, he gets to hold up his bill as a “solution,” and Republicans have to keep pointing out their objections, and also holding up aid to Ukraine, while Dems claim that they didn’t want a solution, just an issue, and that they’re in Putin’s pocket.

That is not three-dimensional chess, that is checkers, played badly.

This just means he’s in on the kickbacks. Bucks county has a few defensive contractors located there to pull finds from.

Fitzpatrick is liberal scum, but at least he has a good reason — he represents a district of liberal scum.

Wow, thanks for that broad brush

Fitzpatrick's district is purple/leaning blue right now, and he is straddling the line to keep himself safely in power. Mixed levels of middle class white & blue collar sprinkled with bored suburban Karens and "Hate has No Home" types commuting to NY. Recent large influx of Hispanics into the "section 8" set-aside community & many Ukrainians (& Russians?) in the nicer areas

I'm sure some percentage of his votes come from people who still think he's his (deceased) brother & he actually seems proud of the crappy voting record he has within "his" party. I've written and called many times about this, but get blah-blahs about representing "all of us".

He has recently been making noise about being "tough on the border" issue, but otherwise total squish who is safely ensconced because the Dems are fine with him.

Don’t take it personally — I didn’t mean the district was ONLY liberal scum, just a majority. :-)

Compared to the other suburban Philly districts, it’s a positively conservative bastion (which isn’t saying much), just as Bucks County as a whole is superior to MontCo, ChesCo & DelCo. Montgomery and Delaware should be declared as disaster areas and totally written off, at least politically.

The late Michael Fitzpatrick was several light years away from being a conservative, but compared to his brother he was Jesse Freakin’ Helms. At least he never forgot which party he belonged to.

In his defense, though it still doesn’t justify prioritizing the corrupt Democrat regime in Ukraine over the situation here in America, the district as it was when Michael was first elected in 2004 was not as loony left as it is now though it was not a LOT better by any means.

“I think the speaker is inclined to want to put Ukraine on the floor anyway,” Roy said. “So, discharge petition or not, what’s going to happen is, we’re going to bust the [spending] caps, we’re going to spend more money, we’re not going to secure the border. Ukraine is going to get funded. And the American people are going to be wondering what the hell the difference is between the two parties.”

Yup. I despise these people, who want to send our grandkids money to Ukrain, leaving them 34 TRILLION DOLLARS IN THE HOLE.

Half of Congress is probably being blackmailed.

What investigative agency has the legal authority to look into it? And background checks, for treasonous implants, like Omar.

Thanks - no real offense taken — it’s just discouraging to be stuck (for various reasons) in an area that you truly love & grew up in and see it changing around you and not be able to do anything about it or feel like your vote actually counts, because of the cheating and corruption.

It could be worse.

I’m on the other side of PA and my representative is the execrable racist Summer Lee.

Ugh.
