Mitt Romney, We Hardly Knew Ye
The Federalist ^ | 10/30/23 | MARK HEMINGWAY

Posted on 10/30/2023 5:56:20 PM PDT by CFW

Last month, Mitt Romney announced he will retire from the Senate after one term. Romney, who is 76, cited his age. That was undoubtedly a major consideration for a guy with a platoon of grandchildren.

It’s also true that Romney is unpopular with Utah voters and had no real chance of reelection after becoming the most prominent elected Republican antagonist of Donald Trump. With Romney’s 30-year political career ending with a whimper, there would naturally be a forceful attempt to shape his legacy as something other than a failure.

Fortunately, Romney already made plans for this. The Atlantic’s McKay Coppins, also a practicing Mormon, was already beavering away on a Romney biography that was sure to be sympathetic. Sure enough, very soon after Romney’s retirement announcement, The Atlantic ran a juicy excerpt adapted from the prologue of the forthcoming book. While the excerpt was sympathetic to Romney, in some ways it defied expectations.

The tableau it paints of Romney is something of a caricature. A luxury condo in the Watergate was too painful a commute to the Capitol, and Ann Romney doesn’t like spending time in D.C., so he’s living alone in a $2.4 million townhouse on Capitol Hill. He passes the time by watching Ted Lasso reruns on his 98-inch television while eating salmon sandwiches slathered in ketchup because he doesn’t like salmon. (When it comes to food, the septuagenarian Romney, who has declared his favorite meat is “hot dog,” seems to have the maturity of a 7-year-old.)

There are several good bits in the article, but one of my favorites is this:

"I half expected the excerpt to end with Coppins nervously edging toward the door as Romney casually starts to fondle an axe and lay down plastic sheeting in the living room while cheerfully monologuing about what a tool Josh Hawley is."

He’ll always have a spot at CNN as the go-to Republican.

Mitt Romney announced he will retire from the Senate after one term.

I had to check this. It feels like Romney has been in the Senate for two terms (12 years).

Romney couldn't face the voters for re-election after his poor performance in Washington.

This will make two one-term offices Romney has held, in two different states, and being forced to leave both of them for poor performance.

He couldn’t even get re-elected in Massachusetts even though he represented that constituency for most of the last six years.

Sorry, Romne did not have a 30 year political career.

He appeared out of nowhere to run against Ted Kennedy in 1994 (mainly on his father’s name), then vanished, then reappered to take out acting-governor Jane Swift of MA and he defeated the Democrat in November.

Did a shitty job as governor (I live in MA), decided to run for president, lost, decided to run for president, lost, then was bequeathed a US Senate seat because Orrin Hatch wanted to retire and didn’t want the seat to go conservative.

He’s not some elder statesman like Richard Nixon.

He’s a failed and worthless politician.

Never in my life have I been MORE disappointed in a leader than I am with Mitt Romney.

As early as 2001, when I saw Mitt Romney come in and SAVE the 2002 Winter Olympics, I thought... This guy would make a GREAT President.

I was disappointed that he didn’t run in 2008. But, I dismissed it by thinking. “He saw the writing on the wall with Obama’s 1st term”.

In 2012, Mitt was PERFECTLY positioned to save us from the Communist’s 2nd term. But, he WIMPED OUT! He refused to go after Obama’s failure at Benghazi and handed over any chance he had at victory.

I’m convinced, this weakness was a BIG part of what persuaded Trump... (a patriot who would have preferred to remain a businessman) ... to run for President. I think DJT would have been MUCH happier to see Romney win, and enact pro-business policies. But, he didn’t. So, Trump had NO CHOICE.

After that, Romney went total milque-toast. Worse, he became a Trump-hater.

Well... SCREW YOU, Mitt Romney. Go enjoy your millions of dollars and grandkids. Just leave REAL governance to men with BALLS, like DJT!

I don’t see how Hemmingway can call Romney an “otherwise exemplary man” after setting out what he knows about him and the lies in the book, but the final paragraph in the article is this:

“By contrast, until I read Romney: A Reckoning, it had never occurred to me that the most obvious reason Romney’s political career petered out in a hail of grievances is that he’s turned into — and it pains me to say this about an otherwise exemplary man — kind of an asshole.”

Long-winded article on a subject none of us really care about. Hard to believe an entire book on him will sell.

Yes, we know Romney and he is a real POS. Hopefully, Mormons will learn not to vote for a candidate just because of his/her religion.
