“San Francisco’s proposed reparation plan, which would dole out $5 million to each Black resident.”

Do they have to prove they are descendants of slaves? Prove they have been harmed as a result of being 10x removed from their ancestors ..who may or MAY NOT have been slaves. Their were blacks who were not slaves even back then.
Who’s next? Chinese Americans ..Irish Americans ..transsexual Americans?

As a former economist who did reparation calculations for court cases, I'd like to know how they arrived at that number. I think most economists would agree that number is a rectal-pull.

The whole idea behind reparations is to leave the plaintiff in a position of financial indifference relative to the presence of the event (slavery). This requires the counterfactual of measuring income with or without the event. I collected US black income data and compared it to what blacks would earn in their alternative employment in the absence of the event. That means gathering black income data from Guyana, The Republic of the Congo, and Senegal, as that's where most slaves came from. I then did a present value calculation for just over 150 years. In the end, each black in the US owes non-blacks slightly over $640,000. I'd really like to know the methodology behind their numbers.

elimination of all personal debt, guaranteed annual incomes of at least $97,000 for 250 years, and homes for Black residents for just $1.

Insanity, Delusional, Unsustainable, and Merely the Opening Demand.

Before the nation has to pay for San Fran's insanity, it will have collapsed into a pile of smoldering cinders. That said, the country is already heading in that direction at light speed (i.e., collapse, not payment of reparations).

As an aside, reparations would devastate an already disintegrating black population in America. Their culture has been pampered, enabled, and victimized by the racism of low expectations to the point at which it is, as a society, broken beyond repair.

Black Americans deserve more. They deserve the right to stand on their own two legs.

But when the Left sees an opportunity, don't get in their way.

Please note that this is an OPINION column published by the Hill, lest one thinks they have become enlightened to the nonsense of the left.

" In the end, each black in the US owes non-blacks slightly over $640,000."

There was an article yesterday that made that exact point. If the slaves had stayed in Africa, their descendants alive today would have an average life expectancy of 30 years and many would die in unsafe, unsanitary conditions or by the warlords.

Not only that, but many of them would have been sold into slavery by the muslim slave traders in North Africa and the Middle East. So their life of indentured servitude would have been the same in either case.

I keep waiting for people to go after the AFRICAN slave traders who sold their countrymen into slavery in the first place.

I have just always assumed that reparations cities never expected to pay for reparations themselves.

There was an article here last week that said FJB’s “government” is considering using the “honor system”. The only proof they need is black skin and know how to check the “I was a slave” box on the application. Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah! That’s all there is to it.

If The Hill thinks this is such a bad thing maybe they should start supporting Donald Trump for a second term.

Trump himself campaigned for re-election in 2020 on a $500 billion "Platinum Plan" of handouts to blacks.

I'm sure many here have conveniently memory-holed this.

She is right. If these scams actually become law we all will be paying the tab. The article makes a clear case.

??? I see no evidence that The Hill thinks this is a bad thing. I think they are gloating.

That’s nothing new. That is why the SALT tax deduction being capped was such an issue. For years they did all kinds of unsustainable things and foisted the bill off on the rest of the country.

I have always maintained, had it not been for the slavery, most African Americans would not even exist. If, for whatever quirk of history, one of your great great grandfathers never met your great great grandmother, you would not exist. It wouldn't mean that you would have red hair instead of brown. It would mean that your great great grandfather would have had different children (if any) with a different woman. Those children, very likely, would not have paired with your eventual great grandparent and so on.

What I am trying to say is that blacks in America owe their very existence to the atrocity of slavery. How much is your existence worth?

And just for the record, everyone owes their existence to an incalculable number of historical atrocities. Everyone today is alive because of wars, and rapes, and slavery. Not to mention the effects of famine and disease.

Should people of African descent pay reparations for enslavement of Europeans in the Barbary slave trade by North Africans?

which includes not only millions in payouts to eligible Black residents, but also an elimination of all personal debt, guaranteed annual incomes of at least $97,000 for 250 years, and homes for Black residents for just $1.

Hard to believe anyone could think that would actually work.

Yeah, but here’s just a tad of a difference between increasing access to capital and flat handing out money.

There is no way the rest of the country or anyone out of San Fran is going to help pay for this.

The African American Reparations Advisory Committee consists of 14 members, all black. Do you suppose they all meet the eligibility requirements to receive reparations?
