In the wake of President Biden's mention of nuclear "armageddon", and Elon Musk tweeting that "nuclear war probability is rising rapidly," it is natural that people have pondered online what they would do, and where they would shelter, in the event of a nuclear war.

Probably not. EMP’s are pretty specific and have been tested. The problem will more related to getting fuel to power plants. They key to survival is to live where zombies have to climb to get you. They are more likely to just feed off the people closest at hand so large urban areas are the wrong place to be. Suburbs partly so. Small towns in remote areas are the safest. I live in a large Appalachian county with 18,000 people, all of whom are armed.

For me it’s kind of a joke question but maybe not for some others. As I said believers like me won’t be here when it all comes crashing down. Maybe some other poor soul may need that kid of protection although what’s coming is so horrific, there’ll really be no protection.

Since you’re looking at the bright side, I’ve got a great movie for you. Harlan Ellison’s novel A Boy and His Dog made into a movie. Great stuff.
I've had 3000 RADs through my gut. 300 RAD at a session. The hair on my mid-section brushed off at 600 RAD. By 1200 RAD, I had diarrhea that even Lomotil and Compazine were hard pressed to fix. Every treatment came with 4 to 6 hours of vomiting. Every treatment was preceded by a blood test to see if my blood count could tolerate another treatment. Much of the marrow in my spine and pelvis was fried by the treatment. It took two years before I had sufficient stamina to walk around the block. A huge drop from speed skating at a roller rink 6 hours per night, 6 nights a week.
My wife had 5000 RADs to treat breast cancer. She developed diabetes and is now an insulin dependent T1 diabetic. Her treatment didn't come with hours of puking and diarrhea, but she wasn't unscathed.
Having experienced radiation sickness, I'm not anxious for another round.

My Dad was SIOP cleared and involved in nuclear war planning. He always used to say, “A lot of things have to go right for an ICBM warhead to detonate on target, and a lot of things can go wrong.” Just ask Elon Musk.
Their current ICBM force went into service in 1988. They’ve been sitting around in Siberia for decades, during periods of extremely low military funding, amidst the rampant corruption of the Russian state. We can hope that many will malfunction. We can’t rely on it. And even one hitting target will be an utter horror show.
I understand that. I’m debating whether to read it or not to see what happens next as civilization is tries to rebuild. Is it possible? What’s the timeline? The first book was definitely thought provoking. I think I will. If I do, I’ll give you a review of hopefulness or more tragic bleakness.
