People can make fun of us all they want about the unusual food combinations that Southerners grow up eating and never stop loving. A peanut butter-and-mayonnaise sandwich? Pass the chips. Pineapple-and-cheese casserole? We'll take seconds. Salt on watermelon? Duh. However, the most classic combination barely needs an introduction: peanuts and Coca-Cola. These two very different items, in fact, are not just a snack and refreshment to be enjoyed separately at the same time, but a dynamic duo to be guzzled straight out of a cold glass bottle. Together.

I love generalizations about southerners
Always wrong
Like Deliverance
Oh yes hillbillies
Certain to be faggots of course
What Bullshit
Salt on watermelon.. Salt and pepper on cantalope. That is holy tradition passed down by my PA Dutch parents and kinfolk. Also, still ringing in my ears from travels in Dixie as a kid, is a male voice saying, “Have a RC CokeCola”. Verbatim. The “cokecola” part spoken as one word, with no break between syllables.
It should be remembered that “RC” stands to Royal Crown.
RC is rarely seen these day in the Holy City, but not as hard to find as “Moxie”.
I can certainly attest to not liking grits and I did not grow up with them, so I believe you about boiled peanuts.
That sounds sick! But I would probably actually like it. I put hot sauce on everything. Hot watermelon would either be delicious or the devil’s spawn, I can’t tell which. I have to try it now, just for grins.
RC Cola + peanuts was the best...
Not mentioned was the ubiquitous lunch of coke and a pack of Nabs, preferably Lance peanut butter crackers...
Still putting peanuts in their cokes
They are messy to eat however so I prefer to eat them outdoors or in a place where you can drop the shells to the floor (like at a Texas Roadhouse).
Yeh, those small eight ounce glass bottles with a nickel bag of peanuts poured in it. Loved this as a kid but have forgotten about it over the years. May try to reconstruct it π
Donβt do Coke, since they went Woke. Unsweet tea for me!
When I was a sprout RC cola was a penny cheaper than Coke at every country store and shop we dealt with.
Boiled Peanuts!!
I grew up southern with a mom from Georgia, and I still cannot stand boiled peanuts. Roasted and salted in the shell they’re great. I love grits too! They’re a butter and salt delivery system.
RC and a moon pie! And it’s pronounced ‘co cola’
Well, we know you are a Yankee for sure. with certainty.
The proper way for preparing grits to taste wi with butter, salt and pepper. For prepared grits, Shrimp ‘n grits has come on strong and is acceptable
Honey? Perish the Yankee thought. Grits are not oatmeal or Cream of Wheat
I had a military buddy receive a care package from his folks in Georgia, among other things, 3 cans of boiled peanuts. I had never had them, he gave me one, he gave me one snot covered one, he gave me one snot covered green tasting one, he gave me one snot covered green tasting slightly mushy one. I was traumatized. Sorry, the memory of it still haunts me 35 years later. ππππ
I’, a Yankee and like grits. Boiled peanuts don’t do much for me.
I’ve had Coke and Peanuts. It’s OK. The first time I saw that I was on a plane and the lady next to me had a bottle of coke with peanuts floating in it. When I asked she laughed and said
it’s a southern black thing.”
Pro Tip: If you’re ever in a steakhouse in Muscle Shoals Alabama and ordering your dinner, don’t ask IF they have sweet tea.
Forks will drop on plates and you hear everyone whisper “They’s a Yankee in Heah”
Don’t ask how I know
No its coke. I grew up doing it. And salt on watermelon. π
