Burger King owner says operator in Russia refuses to shut shops
The Guardian (UK) ^ | 18 Mar 2022 | Mark Sweney

The owner of Burger King has said the operator of its 800 stores in Russia has “refused” to close them, despite its demand to suspend trading after the invasion of Ukraine.

Last week, Burger King, which is owned by Restaurant Brands International (RBI), said it had suspended all supply chain, operational and marketing support for the Russian operation.

RBI has been unable to close the operations directly, as rivals such as McDonald’s have done, because of a complicated legal contract with its main franchisee partner, Alexander Kolobov, with whom it has run the joint venture in Russia for a decade.

“We contacted the main operator of the business and demanded the suspension of Burger King restaurant operations in Russia,” David Shear, the president of RBI, said in a statement and letter to staff. “He has refused to do so. Would we like to suspend all Burger King operations immediately in Russia? Yes. Are we able to enforce a suspension of operations today? No.”

Burger King is one of a number of western companies, including Marks & Spencer and the hotel groups Marriott and Accor, that are prevented by complex franchise deals from withdrawing.

Five Guys / FatBurger / Mooyah, etc. are a step up from the food burger chains (McD, BK, Wendy, etc) - Fast Casual vs Fast Food. They are not head to head competitors. And folks like Red Robin are another step up from those.

Isn’t it against the Geneva Convention to force Burger King on the civilian population?

So what? If I owned the joints, I’d re-name them to Burger Czar.

XD... I can’t believe people fall for this crap. It’s probably always been this way, I’m just getting older and can see it.

On another point about getting older, have you noticed that all movies are pretty much all just remakes of older movies? Almost nothing is new. e.g. Pocahontas, Dances with Wolves, and Avatar are all the same movie.

Didn't Putin sieze McDonald's and open it back up? These feel good symbolic acts fail when the fellow they try and hit can change the law at will.

America need only supply the resistance with weapons. The people of Ukraine have not forgot Stalin's massacre by starvation. They will be resisting Russia for as long as it takes.

Joe Biden made sure that US influence in Russia is ZERO when he went nuclear with the sanctions. So Burger King, you want to shut down stores in Russia? Isn’t it a pity that you aren’t in Russia and have no ability to shut them down. Why don’t you fly over to Moscow and try to shut them down yourself, oh wait Biden cancelled the flights. I guess you can swim?

Better than the Burger Commissar … where the secret to the secret sauce is there’s no secret sauce. Also, you pay now and come back in a month.

What part of the owner of the Russian Burger King is Russian does BK headquarters not understand? Mickey D’s suspended operations there and this guy will be taking up the slack. Best thing for his business is this war. And BK will not be able to pull his franchises after the war because Putin will simply tell them there will be no BKs in Russia if his franchises are pulled.

These canceling virtue signaling actions of Big Business and Big Government should remind us all of how Boris Johnson and Joe Biden are the leaders of Cultural Marxism in the Western World.

Hahah yeah.

I read a book once that described life in E. Germany behind the wall. It was like you said, they bought a car and had to wait... I think it was 10 years to get it!

Sadly, I never got to the end where she got reunited with her family because I forgot the book in a hotel bathroom.

Thank You, Russia Burger King, there are people who SELL buns that needed to feed their family. Employees need to take home pay to keep food on their table. And thanks in behalf of farmers who sell cows. The local, common Russian folks, subjects like many Canadians to a TYRANT... say thanks, for keeping the wheels churning, as the real person you are trying to cause PAIN to.. Putin, won;t probably be going to Burger King today.

There are bathrooms in the hotels in your country?
