Burger King owner says operator in Russia refuses to shut shops
The Guardian (UK) ^ | 18 Mar 2022 | Mark Sweney

The owner of Burger King has said the operator of its 800 stores in Russia has “refused” to close them, despite its demand to suspend trading after the invasion of Ukraine.

Last week, Burger King, which is owned by Restaurant Brands International (RBI), said it had suspended all supply chain, operational and marketing support for the Russian operation.

RBI has been unable to close the operations directly, as rivals such as McDonald’s have done, because of a complicated legal contract with its main franchisee partner, Alexander Kolobov, with whom it has run the joint venture in Russia for a decade.

“We contacted the main operator of the business and demanded the suspension of Burger King restaurant operations in Russia,” David Shear, the president of RBI, said in a statement and letter to staff. “He has refused to do so. Would we like to suspend all Burger King operations immediately in Russia? Yes. Are we able to enforce a suspension of operations today? No.”

Burger King is one of a number of western companies, including Marks & Spencer and the hotel groups Marriott and Accor, that are prevented by complex franchise deals from withdrawing.

If I owned the stores I would try to get Mr. Shear to come out for a visit.

Frankly, good for BK Russia.

It isn’t that I don’t care about Russia invading Ukraine but that I don’t care what politically correct weasels in this country think about it.

Or what they think about anything.

So, an entity which owns 15% of Russian Burger King operations, demands the partner who owns 85%, shut down operations and destroy his business.

The main owner refuses to do so.

Why is anyone surprised?

They still have rings. Their fries used to be terrible, but the burgers were better than MickeyD's and they didn't charge extra for substituting rings.

Isn’t it strange how the libtards hold every Russian in the entire world fully accountable for the actions of Putin?

And to put a finer point on it... the leftards interpretation of the actions of Putin?

Where is theRussian franchisee getting its food and inventory from then? I always thought these franchises got its food product from the parent company. But I admit I am pretty ignorant in the details of how restaurant franchises work.

LOL. He might end up owning the missing 15% too. Worst thing that may happen is that he will change the name.

The reality of Western business withdrawal from Russia seems to be a tiny bit different from reported.

Some companies left, some have problems leaving (cf. Burger King), many simply stopped *new investing* — this is not quite leaving.

When the dust settles, it will turn out that those who left will be replaced by local and Chinese companies.

Years ago when I needed fast food Burger King and Wendy’s were my two favorites. Taco Bell was once good but they went downhill badly.

Now I go to local indy sandwich shops, they are better than the chains.

Good for the operator.

Since Burger King has already publicly declared they don't want the business of Christians, I couldn't care less.

Agree. How does shutting down McDonald’s, Burger King, etc. hurt Putin and his henchmen?

Those places are still open in China (the Chinese particularly love KFC) and look what they’ve done.

Contracts should be honored. They are the basis for interactions between businesses. If someone wants special terms and conditions for unique circumstances and events it’s up to them to include them in the contract. Contracts are two way agreements.
