REPORTER KILLED Brent Renaud killed – US journalist shot dead and colleague wounded while covering war in Ukraine

AN AMERICAN journalist has been killed by Russian troops while covering the war in Ukraine, according to police in Kyiv.

Reporter Brent Renaud was reportedly shot dead in Irpin, just outside the capital.

Andrey Nebitov, the head of the Kyiv region police, said the 51-year-old filmmaker "paid his life" for reporting on the invasion.

Another journalist, thought to be Mr Renaud's colleague, was also reportedly injured in the attack.

"A 51-year-old world-renowned media correspondent was shot in Irpen today," Nebitov said.

"Another journalist is injured. Now they are trying to remove the victim from the war zone.

"Of course, the profession of a journalist is a risk, but US citizen Brent Renaud paid his life for trying to highlight the aggressor's ingenuity, cruelty and ruthlessness."

Initial reports suggest Mr Renaud worked for the New York Times, but the newspaper has confirmed he was not in Ukraine on its behalf.

"We are deeply saddened to hear of Brent Renaud’s death. Brent was a talented photographer and filmmaker who had contributed to the New York Times over the years," a statement from the NYT reads.

"Though he had contributed to The Times in the past (mostly recently in 2015), he was not on assignment for any desk at The Times in Ukraine.

"Early reports that he worked for The Times circulated because he was wearing a Times press badge that been issued for an assignment many years ago."

Terrified locals have been fleeing to Kyiv from fierce battles and shelling in surrounding areas like Hostomel and Bucha.

In Irpin, a suburb about 12 miles northwest of central Kyiv, bodies lay out in the open Saturday on streets and in a park as shelling continues to rain down.

It comes as the battle around the capital rages on as Russian forces close in, with brave Ukrainian soldiers setting up tank traps on the streets to repel invaders.

Putin's troops are inching closer and are believed to be just 15 miles from the city.

But Volodymyr Zelensky warned the Russians would only be able to take control of Kyiv if they "raze it to the ground" as the Ukrainian president confirmed around 1,300 of his troops had been killed since the conflict began.

Yeah, so he got killed, but how many other people are getting killed? Why is this guy such a special little buttercup? What’s worse is that he CHOSE to be in the line of fire. He was getting PAID to be there. In a real way he was exploiting the situation in Ukraine to embellish his own credentials, feather his own nest. He was using the blood of all those civilians as a binder. He got killed doing it.

So yea, I’m sorry that I’m not real sorry.

Spy. His shooting will be justified by Putin.

Doesn’t say who shot him, does it?

Ukrainians say he was shot by Russians. Other witnesses say they were shot at after crossing a checkpoint manned by Ukrainians.

So who the hell knows? Ukraine has been handing out assault rifles to anyone who asks for one, no training required.

A dear price to pay to put bread on the table. And a non-combatant...

He had the badge from an assignment some years ago. I imagine he wore it because it was the only thing had had to ID himself as press. Sounds like he was freelancing.

Putin’s troops are 15 miles from Kiev? Yesterday they were 10 miles from Kiev. 🤔

"humanity, people. humanity."

That was then. This is now, and I might suggest you adapt to the New Reality.

We've just spent that last two years with a health system that wants to kill you.

Oh don’t bother to give facts about this man who died there, while Putin lovers here talk trash about his life and death.

Didn’t you read, the Ukrainians murdered him to add to all their studio-shot fake war they created?

There is no war, Russians kill no one, Ukrainians are nazis,in fact one kook who posts this nonsense told me last night our interest in the Ukraine is racist because we don’t spend this much time talking about Africa!

I respect anyone who places themselves in a war zone much less gets killed.

I found it refreshing when they embedded reporters with US military units back in 2003 when we went into Iraq...there was a lot less negative reporting IMO.

Harder to do that when they have firsthand knowledge and live with them...that they aren’t baby-killers and such.

Every war correspondent ever has done the same and runs the same risks. Currently reading Richard Tregaskis (famous for “Guadalcanal Diary”) biography by Boomhower. Just finished Alan Moorehead’s (he was an Australian war correspondent) classic “Desert War” trilogy.

Its those guys out there who write things like “The Desert War”.

War is anonymous almost always, men are shot at and die without the shooter knowing their targets identity. And more so if they died in a bombardment, which is completely undiscriminating. Death in war is a random thing.

Oh it was a Russian Troop who shot him! So the Russian did not know the New York Times is the American Pravda.

Exactly. The Russians have thanked the New York Times for decades for their propaganda covering up the crimes of Josef Stalin in Ukraine
