AN AMERICAN journalist has been killed by Russian troops while covering the war in Ukraine, according to police in Kyiv.
Reporter Brent Renaud was reportedly shot dead in Irpin, just outside the capital.
Andrey Nebitov, the head of the Kyiv region police, said the 51-year-old filmmaker "paid his life" for reporting on the invasion.
Another journalist, thought to be Mr Renaud's colleague, was also reportedly injured in the attack.
"A 51-year-old world-renowned media correspondent was shot in Irpen today," Nebitov said.
"Another journalist is injured. Now they are trying to remove the victim from the war zone.
"Of course, the profession of a journalist is a risk, but US citizen Brent Renaud paid his life for trying to highlight the aggressor's ingenuity, cruelty and ruthlessness."
Initial reports suggest Mr Renaud worked for the New York Times, but the newspaper has confirmed he was not in Ukraine on its behalf.
"We are deeply saddened to hear of Brent Renaud’s death. Brent was a talented photographer and filmmaker who had contributed to the New York Times over the years," a statement from the NYT reads.
"Though he had contributed to The Times in the past (mostly recently in 2015), he was not on assignment for any desk at The Times in Ukraine.
"Early reports that he worked for The Times circulated because he was wearing a Times press badge that been issued for an assignment many years ago."
Terrified locals have been fleeing to Kyiv from fierce battles and shelling in surrounding areas like Hostomel and Bucha.
In Irpin, a suburb about 12 miles northwest of central Kyiv, bodies lay out in the open Saturday on streets and in a park as shelling continues to rain down.
It comes as the battle around the capital rages on as Russian forces close in, with brave Ukrainian soldiers setting up tank traps on the streets to repel invaders.
Putin's troops are inching closer and are believed to be just 15 miles from the city.
But Volodymyr Zelensky warned the Russians would only be able to take control of Kyiv if they "raze it to the ground" as the Ukrainian president confirmed around 1,300 of his troops had been killed since the conflict began.
Interesting, a journalist "pretending" to work for the NY Times? Was he previously employed by the times?? He was wearing a NY Times Press badge, where did he get it? Was he fired and decided to go rogue with NO support and trying the make a name for himself?
People get killed in a war? Shocking.

Doesn’t say who shot him, does it?
So he was an independent faking to be a legitimate reporter. Not smart as you need protection and support to report in a war zone.

Likely just a spy.
Shot dead? Street cred.
For decades Russian rules of engagement have been to shoot anyone with a camera.
Ukrainians probably shot him for their staged war movie sets. Quite revealing.

Likely a “stringer” - a reporter not on the regular staff of the NYT (or maybe any newspaper). Works on a part-time basis to report on events in a particular place. Sell his/her reporting to whatever news organization will buy it.
Probably freelance.
Not smart in a war zone. You need a lot of support to reduce risk in a war zone and it costs money. Independents put themselves at increased risk.
So I guess he learned that war can really smart

With no support or guidance or intel, really stupid.
There is somethng very “odd” about the NYT response in this story. The story has a smell to it. If it hadn’t been for the NYT disclaimer, I wouldn’t be thinking this.
Agree but it’s been going on since newspapers reported on wars. It used to be that was the only type of foreign correspondent\reporter. Newspapers didn’t have, claimed not to have or just didn’t want to pay the money for permanent ones. The work was literary piecework.

IMO, like most other 'journalists' he was there not out of the need to report the truth. There to self-aggrandize.
sad - this is a risky assignment even for the well-protected. Russians honor no’rules of engagement’ no ‘cease fires’ no humanitarian evacuation routes, nor the sanctity of houses of worship or hospitals no regard for being cited for ‘war crimes’ anyone who chooses to cover the story is a target. i feel for his family and i don’t care who credentialed him. humanity, people. humanity.
