A derecho, otherwise known as a widespread, long-lived, straight-line wind storm, is expected to traverse parts of the Midwest Wednesday night and early Thursday, according to The Weather Channel.
Derechos can cause hurricane-force winds, tornadoes, torrential rains, and flash floods. This one could wreak havoc in the areas shaded in purple below.
What’s important to note is that this derecho is sweeping across the corn belt.
A Moderate risk for severe weather remains forecast for much of the state of Wisconsin. Damaging winds (some 75+ mph) are the primary threat this afternoon and evening. Very large hail and a few tornadoes are also possible. Stay weather aware if you live within these areas. pic.twitter.com/X9uHShYykf

Last year, a derecho rolled through Iowa and damaged about 14 million crop acres, or about 57% of the state’s farms.
Across the corn belt, crops have already been damaged by sweltering heat and a persisting megadrought. This could weaken the root system and make corn more susceptible to snap under wind pressure.
It's Always Something.
OshKosh Airventure attendees getting nervous?
Yep. And they are trying to make us feel guilty before it ever even happens now. Due to the climate deniers are responsible for all weather “events”, it seems.
Shortage of ethanol for gasoline. Woohoo
This is it. This time we are all going to really die. I mean it, really.
Problem solved.
Ping...
So, it’s going to be windy?
Ohmagosh! Is there a vaccine?
In other words, thunderstorms. We don’t evacuate entire states in the midwest when tornadic weather happens.
I’ve heard of a chinook and a sirocco. But never yet a derecho until now. I see from Wikipedia that tornadoes twist wind while derechos drive them in a straight line.
Sh*t happens!
This year’s “bomb storms.”
Shark Derecho!
Yeah, survived a derecho in Virginia about 10 years ago. I didn’t lose power, but lots of the neighbors as close as one street away were without power for a week or so.
There goes the corn belt. Maybe the farmers will be able to recover in 10 or 15 years from another farming disaster. It’s not like they are dealing with massive drought already, right?
Yes. Derechos are the real thing. Not a new phenomenon.
Yeah, doesn’t ring the same.
Maybe there can be a new movie series set in Texas called Derricko! where oil derricks, wind turbines, and what-not get blown around and chop things up.
I didn’t deny them. Just had never yet heard of them.
We had a derecho storm where I live, in Syracuse NY, back in August 1999. One person was killed by a falling tree. It knocked a 765-kV line off its stanchions and caused a power outage that lasted several days.
As it bore down on my house, which was located on a hillside, I looked out and saw so much lighting the landscape looked like a scene from the Bible. Continuous flashing strokes across the whole field of view. Then the rain hit, and my front window looked exactly like the whole house was going through an automated car wash. The most intense part of the storm lasted maybe five minutes.
[ Then all the remaining corn can be used to feed people rather than turned into useless and damaging biofuels.
Problem solved. ]
Commies starved the Ukraine while EXPORTING grain from the area...
Why do you think this time would be different?
