ABC legal analyst Sunny Hostin said Friday on ABC’s “The View” she believed that the Second Amendment “was designed to protect slavery” by empowering local militia groups to “put down slave revolts.”
Hostin said, “If you look at the history of the NRA for decades, the NRA has pushed legislation that not only supported a lot of gun ownership and the proliferation of guns but stifled the study and spread of information right, about the causes of gun violence. And when we talk about the culture of guns in this country, I’m reading an incredible book called ‘The Second’ by professor Carol Anderson. And she describes that the constitutional — the Second Amendment really was the right to bear arms was designed to protect slavery, right, because they wanted — our Founding Fathers and others, they wanted to be able to empower a local militia group to basically put down slave revolts and protect plantation owners.

Harriet Tubman always carried a gun.
She did indeed. It was her first purchase when she got north, and while she never used it to kill anyone, she did use it on people she was taking north who wanted to turn back. No one would be allowed to have a chance to expose her Underground Railroad route.
You never heard about this - ever wonder why? You likely also never heard that the British march on Concord was not to attack civilians but to take control of their guns.

The original intent of the 2nd Amendment was to protect the right of the people to defend against tyranny, from whatever quarter. All the other reasons follow from there.
I guess it didn’t work. Emancipation proclamation signed in 1862 by Republican president Lincoln. The Democrats did fight back but lost their bid to reinstate slaver. Now welfare is the new slavery.
She and the others ain’t dumb. They totally understand Goebbels and essentially how to control a nation. There are people, far too many, who will hear this stuff and nod while thinking that makes sense to me. I retired from teaching JHS Soc St in NYC 10 years ago and even then I would get incoming 8th graders who had been propagandized by their 7th grade teachers who taught out of Howard Zinn’s masterpiece of propaganda.
Deacons for Defense comes to mind.
Though I think that was a later group supported by the NRA.

Even if her idiotic assertion was true (it is not) the 2nd Amendment applies equally to all citizens today and there is a high level of gun ownership in the black community. Does she plan to send the army door to door in the inner city to take guns away from the gang members and thugs who are killing other members of the black community in large numbers in major urban areas with substantial African American populations? Chicago, Baltimore, Atlanta, Memphis, East St. Louis and Charlotte come immediately to mind. As I recall New York also has its problems.

Federalist #29 and #45 make it clear that the 2nd amendment was meant to protect against a standing army being used by a tyrannical government to enslave the people.

Ignoring the fact that the NRA was founded as a civil rights organization, one of its missions being enabling blacks to own firearms as a defense against the Klan.
Ignoring the fact that the NRA trained neighborhood black militias like the one in Birmingham to defend against the Klan Nightriders. One member of that militia was the father of Condeleeza Rice.
But what are facts? Facts are racist, especially when they go against the Truth given to us by the Party.
The media is usually pretty accurate providing the news 180 degrees from what actually occurred. So in that case, they nailed it.

In New York State, slavery was legal until 1827.
