First case of Delta-plus, 'double-whammy' variant of COVID, detected in Louisiana

The Delta variant of COVID-19 has spawned a new, troubling variant known as Delta-plus that has been identified for the first time in Louisiana, according to officials at Ochsner Health.

Delta-plus is thought to have the same higher rate of transmission as the Delta variant, which was originally identified in India and is about two times as infectious as the original coronavirus strain. But it also has a characteristic of variants from South Africa and Brazil that makes it harder for antibodies to block it from entering cells.

“It gives you a double whammy,” said Dr. Lucio Miele, who has been part of the sequencing effort in his lab at LSU Health New Orleans. “It’s a more infectious virus and it’s a virus that is not as easily neutralized by antibodies.”

Speaking of Granny, a possum hide can be made into a mask to protect against shedding, spike proteins, prions, etc.

Not directed at me, but there a quite a few people who share concerns about shedding. I am one of them. I don't know yet if there's any veracity to that possibility.

Those who've gotten the shot made their choice, those of us who haven't/won't have made ours.

“It seems to affect younger people more often. In the United Kingdom, studies showed that children and adults under 50 were 2.5 times more likely to become infected....

[note - are young people infected more because most of the elderly in England are vaccinated? or is another dynamic in play?]

.... Studies suggest it might have almost double the risk of hospitalization than the alpha variant.

In China, doctors say patients with the delta variant are sicker than those they treated early in the pandemic....

[note: does this mean fewer asymptomatics?]

...Reports suggest two doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine provides 79% protection against delta variant infection. It seems to be 88% effective against symptoms if infected.

Two doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine are 92% successful in stopping hospitalization due to the delta variant. And no deaths have been reported among those vaccinated.

Someone posted a few days ago that delta was supposed to be milder but WebMD says no? In England, delta is now 90% of all new cases, I think in something like 3 months; in Los Angeles it’s about half of all new cases. First isolated in India, Dec 2020, now in 74 countries. (which is kind of strange considering all the travel restrictions in so many countries but I digress)

The vaccines were modeled to alpha (wuhan) but pharms say they are able to tweek it to account for mutations, like the delta. I guess that’s where boosters come in for those who didn’t receive the latest and greatest version? Or not.

good for them. As kids we knew not to call Mum when the tennis was on. :)

I posted on another thread that the EU shouldn’t restrict Brit tourists because they have such a high vaccination rate. Delta is the dominant variant now but they’re trying their best to outrun it, with an average of 85% of the adult pop with a first dose that gives limited protection, and over two-thirds with a second dose - first dose breakdown: 89% Wales, 83% Scotland/England, 79% Northern Ireland.

Delta is the dominant variant now (in the UK) but they’re trying their best to outrun it.

They are speeding up second shots (now open to all after 3 weeks, had been 12-16 weeks between shots), and using more of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine, that seems a bit more effective against Delta. Adapting the Program to the unique challenges of this variant.

The UK has a very significant percentage vaccinated already, so they have a big lead on suppressing this variant.

When the ‘Delta-{insert next version moniker here}’ is identified; then maybe it will be time to worry. How many versions of their flu are there?

Infectious Disease - Covid-19, Variants, and Immunity
This bears repeating due to its significance to Viral Immunity and Covid Variants :

ransomnote : (Post #13) " Dr. Yeadon, former Chief Science Officer for Pfizer’s Allergy and Infectious Diseases division,
said that a researcher located those who’d had SARS1 in 2003 and tested them this year, with that original SARS1 virus.
Those people were still immune, after 17 years.

The researcher then tested those people with SARS2 (Covid). Those people were immune.
There is ‘only’ a 22% difference in the genomes between Sars1 and Sars2 and so immunity held.

But note those ill in 2003 did not maintain active antibodies for 17 years.
Their immune system hibernated those (my words) antibodies until it recognized the pathogen from years ago and began producing antibodies.

There are two wings to the immune system and Big Pharma is focusing on ‘active antibodies’ as if that is an accurate indicator of immunity.
It actually means ‘activated immunity’, when you may have immunity but haven’t been exposed in so long you don’t have the antibodies.

Dr. Yeadon says the ‘variants’ are no more than 1% or 2% different from Covid and those who’ve had Covid will be immune to the variants.

The Deep State just wants a repeat performance, They want to put us through the lockdowns and panic as if it never happened before;
they like the way we obeyed and want to see it again.."

Wow, a new variant that's resistant to the "vaccine". What a coincidence!

I'll bet a Benjamin to a donut Big Pharma has already developed a booster and is cranking up production for billions more of those 'free' Uncle Sam Bucks!
