That is based on something John Adams said. He may have been unduly pessimistic. But there were a lot of Tories/Loyalists in some districts which sometimes was the result of local animosities rather than their attitude towards King George III.

That is how many supported it. Far less actually took up arms.
Against the most powerful military in the world.

That is an excellent point! By the way, the same can be said about the next war — the war of northern aggression on the south’s side. I don’t know the percent, but it was not great and probably less than 50%.

We can’t trust polling that took place in 2020 and you are trusting polling from 1776?

Some people had aversion to the Crown due to religious reasons, some people were enthralled by the Enlightenment, some land owners did not like how much the Crown wanted from them, some people liked the Crown, some people put up with how much the crown wanted.

Point is where is your "France" who bankrolled the "1/3" American Revolutionaries for the most part and kept the centralized British government uneasy? Once the Revolutionaries gained a lot of ground, Spain and several other countries started financially pitching in as well to defeat the English Crown's hold on British North America.

3% fought at the beginning - hence the organization known as “Three Percenters”. It’s the same organization and command structure as the original Minutemen. (Established 1776.)

I highly encourage everyone to read the organization’s home page and mission. There are many here that should consider joining.

I am in the process - it takes many months.

It was a low percentage but passionate with a clear objective.

Think of what happened. A passionate local leader would organize a local militia and then meet with George Washington to offer his services.

When they wrote the 2nd amendment, it was not about guns, it was about the militia!

Haven’t our social media masters banned all mention of the American Revolution since it involved violence?

IF the figures that we were told in grad school were accurate (I do NOT KNOW for sure.), the ACTIVE SUPPORTERS of the war against The King of England were about 15% in 1776 AND as the Revolution went on & on the active support for the war lessened.

I’ve heard that said many times. I don’t believe the Congress would have declared independence with that low support. I think the Tories were maybe 10% tops. Very few joined the Tory militias and very few left to Canada after the war.

I believe actual active support was 14%. I think i read that in “A Machine That Would Go of Itself”... about 20 years back.

I can’t even remember where my wife is lately. I think she left me. Or she is down stairs. I hope she has the yourkies, because I can’t find them up here.

I wonder how many would have supported the American Revolution if the poorest colonists were the most likely to be obese like they are in 2021 America.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.” - C.S. Lewis

Consider the Irish.

For 700 years the English subjugated them by their favored technique of supporting the claims of rival clans against each other.

This was their usual tactic in African and Asian nations as well.

In Ireland the turning point came when the rebels moved against the Irish who worked for the English - informers, police - the traitors the English relied on to do their dirty work.

Once the IRA eliminated these the English were forced to rely on their own assets like the brutal Black and Tans, who alienated the native population.

The English lost any support among the pacified Irish and that was the end of British Ireland.

Then consider those who sided with the democrats against their own.

I’m proud to say my 9th great-grandfather who served with the 8th Albany Militia and was at West Point when Benedict Arnold committed his treason.
Today the communist want to erase our history because they have no accomplishments but murders and destructions in their history.
We can’t let that happen.
