The death of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg gives Republicans the chance to do the right thing. For a president up for reelection in just six weeks, the right thing to do would be to hold off.
Its widely assumed that the president will soon announce a nominee and urge quick Senate action. But if Trump and his advisers are focused on his reelection, the shrewd choice would be to do the opposite.
What would he gain from this option? First, he would avoid a ferocious battle in the Senate that would most likely jeopardize several incumbent Republicans. Second, he would avoid branding himself and his party as the rankest of hypocrites. Instead, he would look almost statesmanlike.
He would also give his supporters and particularly anti-abortion voters a powerful motive to turn out on Election Day. Trump would avoid the risk of needlessly alienating those suburban women who are still undecided.
Some Republican senators must be praying to be spared a vote before Election Day. Given how Mitch McConnell quashed Merrick Garlands nomination, leaving a vacancy unfilled for 14 months, those questions would be brutally hard to answer.
Trump also has to consider the possibility of a humiliating rejection of his nominee, something that would require the defection of just four GOP senators. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska had already said she would not vote to confirm a Supreme Court nominee before Inauguration Day. Can Trump count on Mitt Romney?
Several GOP incumbents on the ballot this year are trailing in the polls, including Susan Collins, Cory Gardner, Martha McSally and Thom Tillis. If Trump submits a nomination, will they really want to shackle themselves to a president who appears to be headed for defeat?

I suspect the tacit vetting has already occurred and the candidate has already signed on.
Democrats are always offering the Republicans election advice.
“I think it might actually make sense.”
I disagree; the democrats want:
A) To name RBG’s replacement if Trump loses.
B) Block any appointment they don’t like if they
take the Senate and Trump wins.
The entire point of winning elections is to exercise the power that comes with it. Waiting isn’t going to end the riots. It won’t stop the wildfires, the Chinese flu, or anything. The democrats wouldn’t even acknowledge it as a meaningful gesture. So why bother? What if Trump nominates Hillary for the spot? Would that make you feel better?
Tell Biden to put forward his list now.
Excellent idea. Put SloJoe in a box.
He Chicago Tribune, if you havent figured it out by now, theres a new sheriff in town...
Thats assuming the Senate stays Repub majority. If a nominee is put forth before the election, it strengthens those Rs up for re-election that are struggling and puts pressure on the Rs would would waffle. And IF Trump were to lose and the Senate go D, well, we missed a YUGE opportunity to affect SCOTUS for decades. Press on...
Now this is Haw Haw funny! This guy should go on late night TV
Whistling past the graveyard.
It makes me think about it, especially since I'm not sure McConnell can even deliver a vote much less a confirmation due to RINO Republicans.
Don’t you love it when the left wing press provides helpful suggestions for Republicans? It’s awful nice of them.
Dems won’t give an inch no matter what GOP does. They are a nasty, mean bunch!
The R’s would gain NOTHING!!!!
Do these writers think we are THAT stupid?????
Yup,I remember that one. Evil Spock was very interesting indeed.
This is hilarious!
RBG must be replaced. The Republic hangs on restoring the integrity of the ballot box.
...even though many states(like mine)have adopted massive voter fraud laws to almost guarantee 'rat victories now and in the future.
...so they got a way with that, why not think they can get away with saying this?
It’s a fair point. Just wait and do it during the lame duck, if either the WH or the Congress gets flipped.
Then it comes down to, how do you make sure we keep 50 votes plus Pence after the Abortion Twins and Mr. Magic Underwear defect? Those 3 might be fine with voting to confirm in the lame duck after the election.
And then, after a radicalized WH or Congress — assuming some Dem wins — proceed to ignore all the SCOTUS rulings, how will we feel then?
“Those 3 might be fine with voting to confirm in the lame duck after the election.”
Why would you think that?
