A Wisconsin Walmart manager recently followed store policy in Northern Wisconsin. They interacted with a long term friend of mine.
He is an accomplished world traveler, due to his vocation as a missionary. He has traveled extensively in Europe, Asia, and Australia. He has often remarked about how little freedom most of the world has, compared to the United States.
He is a brave man. I marvel at the dangers he considers routine. When in the United States, he openly carries a sidearm, most commonly a Glock .40 caliber semi-automatic pistol. He says liberty, unclaimed and unused, is easier to lose.
Here is his report of open carry experiences in Wisconsin over the last six months:
I open carry in Wisconsin on a very regular basis, rarely do I have someone say anything to me about it, but every now and then
Last fall I was standing in line to pay for a coffee at our local Kwik Trip convenience store. I was openly carrying my Glock 22. I noticed a man look at me and then go about his business. As I went out to my truck he came outside.
He said, sir, is it legal to carry a pistol like that in public?
I replied yes it is, both our American constitution, as well as our Wisconsin constitution, protect the right to keep and carry arms.
He then said oh, you have a permit to carry.
I replied, no permit is required to carry openly in the State of Wisconsin.
This man was both shocked and excited. He thought he must have a permit to carry, and confided that he was wanting to do that, but was afraid the process would be long and expensive. I informed him it is not; while waiting, he should study up on our gun laws and carry.

"liberty, unclaimed and unused, is easier to lose"
Quote worth keeping:
“liberty, unclaimed and unused, is easier to lose”
It is time for me to start open carrying as well.

I don’t disagree with open carry for those who want to do it. I won’t, because I think being the ‘gray man’ is a better way to go.
I opened carried in two Wis. wal-marts this last week and nothing was said.
Sitting in the back of the bus is fine for people who do not mind it.
We were in Missouri last weekend. Open carry is legal without a permit for anyone over the age of 19. Illinois CCLs are honored there, too.

That’s tactically advantageous. One can see everything that’s going on, and an exit is nearby.
Yep. You can open carry in Wisconsin, but need a permit to CC.
Kinda silly, and it certainly doesn’t stop any of the gang violence in Madistan or Milwaukeestan but it is what it is.
One quick way to get companies like Walmart to take those signs down is to pass legislation specifically assigning companies that post such total unlimited liability for the security of shoppers, and granting them immunity for removing or not posting the signs in the first place. Do that and watch the insurance companies start encouraging carry into their stores, watch the signs vanish.
Unfortunately, there wasn't any serious lobbying presence in Wisconsin for it, and (rumor has it) Governor Walker let it be known he did not want it passed.
Walker was an excellent governor, in most ways, but with a little leadership from him, Wisconsin would have Constitutional Carry today.
Great article. Thanks.
I voted for him primarily on two issues. Reciprocity and judges.
So far zip on reciprocity, and after the past couple weeks, the court, so to speak, is still out on judges.
There's a couple of things that get me about clips like this:
1) Being in Delta or some other Special Forces unit makes you good at key thing: being a soldier. Not necessarily anything else.
2) as someone that has spent numerous hours in conflict, I would imagine that he has some ability to read people. So claiming that just because someone is open carrying, which is completely legal in many states, they are instantly a threat?
3) Kyle emphasizing his "feelings", which is a big part of the problem. Far too many rights have been eroded because of this group or that group's feeling.
Hey...the man is a native of New York City. Be thankful that his viewpoint is as pro-2A as it is. Yes, he could most definitely be better, but we need the courts (and especially the Supremes) changed more urgently. A second Trump term should see major changes in the Courts.
I’m not necessarily going to disagree with anything you wrote. I realize that the 2nd Amendment is there for a reason. Ordering a large mocha with an extra shot of espresso with an AK or AR strapped to your back, isn’t one of them? And most of the guys that you see doing this are only doing if for the shock value and nothing else. That isn’t what the 2A is for.
Open carry is legal and someone wants to do it, doesn’t bother or scare me. I have mine under my shirt. I’d rather no one know mine is there. But, like anyone else, we all toss our bias or opinions in any comments we make here or anywhere else, right(hopefully respectfully)?
Before I leave my house, before I grab my wallet and car keys, I put on my gun. I carry concealed. My style. I don’t want anyone to know I have one and a spare magazine(or two, these days) on me.
Not every person who intends harm is an idiot. The guy who killed 5 cops in Dallas years ago, knew what he was doing. A person with some knowledge and intent can walk around my local home depot, Kroger or Walmart and snatch someone’s gun all day, doesn’t need to bring his own.
I’ve seen several open carry folks in our WM. Made me feel safe.
I believe the states are in control of reciprocity. So, you're unhappy with the 200 judges so far? Good grief, look what he's done with all the dims, the media and half the repubs working against him. He's done a remarkable job.
