Infosec community disagrees with changing 'black hat' term due to racial stereotyping

A Google security researcher withdrew from the Black Hat security conference and asked the community to stop using the 'black hat' term.

The information security (infosec) community has angrily reacted today to calls to abandon the use of the 'black hat' and 'white hat' terms, citing that the two, and especially 'black hat,' have nothing to do with racial stereotyping. Discussions about the topic started late last night after David Kleidermacher, VP of Engineering at Google, and in charge of Android Security and the Google Play Store, withdrew from a scheduled talk he was set to give in August at the Black Hat USA 2020 security conference.

In his withdrawal announcement, Kleidermacher asked the infosec industry to consider replacing terms like black hat, white hat, and man-in-the-middle with neutral alternatives.

The terms actually come from westerns, the guy wearing the black hat was the bad guy, and the good cowboy usually wore the white hat.

You could post all those movie images with the bad guy in the black hat, nothing to do with black people.

If “black” is now automatically associated with “bad”, perhaps Blacks would prefer to go back to calling themselves “Negroes”.

It’s funny that *they* insist anything using the word Black must be bad.

There was a Beetle Bailey (Mort Walker & Dick Browne?) comic strip from the late 1960s - early 1970s, of Lt. Flap (black) conferring on the Army chaplain that he felt the term “black” was associated with negative things.

The chaplain, meaning to console and encourage him, reeled off a list of examples where “black” was positive (e.g. being “in the black” meant being solvent, “blackberry pie is my favorite” etc.).

After all this, Lt. Flap is cheered up. The Chaplain then ends with “See, you were just in a black mood.”

Wish I could find that comic strip.

The word “black” was associated with negative connotations decades, if not centuries before it was adopted for use as a race designation in the English language. Always wondered why it was chosen as the “approved” word to describe a wide range of ethnic types.

For gawd’s sake. Black hat has nothing at all to do with race.

Should we banish the black cocktail dress now, too?

One thing the virus seems to have done is to turn on a stupidity gene in a large part of the population. It is the year of living stupid.

Good Gawd. What ever will be next?

The 8 ball is black and the cue ball is white - racist?
Snow is white and coal is black - racist?
Film noir? - racist?

Just make scheisse up and call it systemic racism or white privilege. Virtually everything the black racists see, or hear, or read is white racism. It will not end.

When speaking of Satan and his demons, it is synonymous with the using the words “the dark forces of evil”. On the other hand when speaking of Jesus and the good that He represents to all of humanity, the words commonly used the world over are “He is the barer of light and truth and He and His angels are always cloaked in white.” I surmise that Satan’s minions will soon declare those two distinctions to be racist thus reaching the epitome of their persecution of everything white to include our Lord and Savior for His depictions of being cloaked in a white robe.

It’s seems to be a pathetic attempt to pre-emptively censor themselves in an effort to signal their virtue, fear and insecurity. If you cede your language, you lose a lot more than a few words. You lose yourself-respect.
