... The U.S. government’s foremost infection disease expert says the United States could experience more than 100,000 deaths and millions of infections from the coronavirus pandemic. ... “I would say between 100,000 and 200,000 cases,” he said, correcting himself to say he meant deaths. “We’re going to have millions of cases.” But he added “I don’t want to be held to that” because the pandemic is “such a moving target.” ...

He also made an interesting suggestion, obliquely, that this country shoud be running a prophylazis trial, perhaps with the healthcare population demographic, using the hydroxychloroquine plus regimen in a prophylaxis dosing schedule. Fauci COULD propose that! will he?

OAN Newsroom
UPDATED 7:00 PM PT — Friday, March 27, 2020
Dr. Anthony Fauci, the health specialist on the coronavirus task force, has said the virus’s mortality rate is closer to that of a bad case of the flu. In a Thursday report published by the New England Journal of Medicine, Fauci conceded COVID-19’s death rate was twice that of the common flu, making it roughly 0.28 percent.

That rate is exceptionally low, especially when compared to that of the SARS and MERS epidemics, which peaked at 9 percent and 36 percent respectively.

His latest comments marked a major about-face for Fauci, who previously claimed the coronavirus was 10 times as deadly as the flu.

“The seasonal flu that we deal with every year has a mortality of 0.1 percent,” he said. “I think if you count all the cases of minimally symptomatic or asymptomatic infection, that probably brings the mortality rate down to somewhere around 1 percent, which means it is 10 times more lethal than the seasonal flu.”

I am lucky for a NJ person. I know of two people who married into our family that have it (Cousin’s wife’s cousin & aunt’s cousin’s son). Both 60-70 year olds.
My cousin is a cop and 4 people in his department are out with COVID-19.
Several nurses that work with my cousin at NYU are out with COVID-19.
One of the family people is hospitalized & one of the cops. One of the people that work the front desk in my daughter’s building has COVID-19. (My daughter is home in NJ now & 3 days into her quarantine, yipee!).

I got news for you Fauci millions are already infected,or have had it. If we were going to see 200,000 deaths that would have already happened, it’s been here since early November.

Daily percentage of new Corona virus deaths to previous day's total by country. 25% = total deaths double every 3 days, 20% = every 4 days, 15% = ever 5 days.

Data from https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/#countries.

If 86% of people who have the disease are asymptomatic then that means instead of the 131K and change confirmed case in the US there have been approx. 917K cases with 2329 deaths. If that’s true then the mortality rate is around 0.25%. I think you just made the flubros case for them.

I respect Dr Fauci’s opinion and years of experience but hopefully he’s wrong and way overestimating the # of future infections.

I believe the good Dr is a creature of bureaucracy. I would like to see a whole lot more urgency from him. I would like to see more urgency from Benito Cuomo on getting that trial started. I would like to see that various politicians understood the consequences of their actions...and inactions.

That said, given the numbers being racked up in NYC, the willingness of residents there to scatter it to the winds, the news from New Orleans, Detroit, the potential for places like Florida with their elderly population...yes, it could pop 100K deaths.

Governors in Nevada and Michigan could make it much worse than it has to be. And in New York State...do I understand that you can't get the Hydrochloride and Z-pack treatment unless you're enrolled in the study, and they're still choosing the participants?

Politicians and bureaucrats need to move at the speed of Trump. If anything is obvious it's that we're being ill served by the politicians and the bureaucrats...Mini Mario decides he'd rather pander to illegals than stockpile respirators? The Governator had California prepared for something like this, and they pissed it away? Governors all over whining about how the Fed isn't giving them what they need? Obama deciding preparedness wasn't a priority?

The ill prepared deciding the only thing to do is unleash their inner fascist? The Congress p$ssing away the last three years on Resist?

Thank God for PT.

Got Proof. Or just wishful thinking.

The hold up comes down to Fauci not putting his approval on it.

You really think Fauci can call up the FDA and tell them to declare the regimen safe and effective for Covid-19?

Are you that anxious to find some boogeyman to pin this all on?

The lockdown is delaying the inevitable herd immunity, which puts the at-risk population at greater risk because they can stay locked down for only so long.

We should let CHINA-19 run its course like the regular flu and focus relief/quarantine on those at greatest risk.

Very true and funny.
The mark of greatness is to know when to delegate and who to delegate to. You always need a Patton in reserve, thinking worst case & channeling get ‘er done.

Our population (US) increases by 2 million a year. If 2 million die this year, our year end population in 2020 will be equal to what it was in 2019.

Fauci has been around since Reagan and the AIDS epidemic. He has always been a bit over reactive, charitably out of an abundance of caution. The worst thing that could happen for someone in his shoes is to be seen as making a prediction which underestimates the outcome.

Correct. It is better to overestimate the deaths and be the hero when it doesn't happen than to underestimate and then be declared incompetent and made a scapegoat of later.

Don't understand why others don't see that political reality.
