New Yorks coronavirus outbreak has violently erupted over the past few days, and the state is now driving the national epidemic while on the West Coast, public health experts are wondering if an early and aggressive response saved California from a similar fate.
California reported some of the earliest coronavirus cases in the United States in late January. And in the first week of March, California and New York were neck and neck on cases of COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus. But over the past week, New York case counts have doubled every few days, and the state now has nearly 10 times the cases California does: 38,000 to 4,200.
Infectious-disease experts say early maneuvers in California, especially in the Bay Area first discouraging people from gathering in crowds and then ordering them to shelter in place may have had a dramatic impact, even if they came only a few days ahead of those in New York.
But other factors may also be in play. New York is testing far more people three times as many as California and therefore identifying more cases, for example. And its possible that whats happening 3,000 miles away could be Californias future.
New York may just be three or four days in front of us. Were going to see an increase in the number of cases here as well, said Dr. Warner Greene, a senior investigator at the Gladstone Institutes in San Francisco who specializes in HIV but is studying the new coronavirus. Days matter they really matter. You think youre fine, youre absolutely fine, but this thing is just waiting to explode.
But we went into shelter in place quicker; we got people apart quicker, Greene said. That could be a contributing factor ...

California has warmer weather.
From related thread:
“Mark D. Levine, Chair of New York City Council health committee, lauded how huge crowds gathering in NYCs Chinatown was a powerful show of defiance of #coronavirus scare, tweeting four images of large groups of people gathered to celebrate the occasion (Chinese New Year).”
PUBLIC TRANSIT
My date was wrong. It was the 1960s.

Well, we didn’t have New York City’s Health Commissioner telling people to go out in public and celebrate Chinese New Year in February when we all knew there was some sort of epidemic going on in China. That might have had something to do with it.
Not in San Francisco, and that place is a colora sewer, not to mention Chinese out the ass. I think something funny is going on.
That pavement is a far cry from road quality I saw in Calif. in the 70s.
Loo...its a hiking trail. That first portion is old pavement.
But, many of the streets around here are not much better than that. Gotta pay for illegals somehow!
Thanks.
I found Calif. in the 70s to have AWESOME State Highway pavements.
The whole place was a Utopia.
Too many lawyers in CA. Labs may be extra careful in their tests to avoid lawsuits.
The difference in the weather.
Its no big deal in nyc. If we were talking st. Patricks day it would be different.
Speaking of which, I wonder if this will cause newsom to rethink the whole high speed rail boondoggle and stick with cars.
Probably not.
Very interesting...I was on active duty then but don’t remember this. I do remember CIA or somebody experimenting with hallucinogenic drugs like LSD. Hell, the government even had GI’s dangerously close to ground zero during A bomb tests! Not surprised by anything government might try.
PS Great art work!
I am convinced there have been Cov-19 cases in California as early as January, and cases treated as flu related pneumonia and flu related severe bronchitis while missing (not testing) that the patients had Cov-19. I personally know of three such cases in California that we suspect but even today those three have not been able to obtain Cov-19 tests. They’d have to get sick again and maybe then they’d get a test - if they had to go to hospital, but no assurance they’d get one otherwise. They are, all three, doing O.K. now, but still suspicious.
I am sorry to hear that your mom and daughter respectively cannot get tested even when sick. I think this is a shameful letdown by our health authorities. This might be the one thing that we can blame on Trump.
My daughter lives in CA.
Not Trump.
Newsom.
Thank you. Hope she is able to get tested soon.
Trump closed the door to China early - saving primarily the western United States. It took longer for him to close the door to Italy and Europe. That’s the difference. Chinese spreaders were stopped from spreading their filth to the United States.... (the virus is the filth...NOT innocent Chinese )
Time will tell.
Maybe at some point she can get the antibody test.
