Daredevil and Flat Earth theorist Michael "Mad Mike" Hughes died Saturday in a rocket crash. Hughes, 64, wanted to prove the Flat Earth theory by taking photographs of the Earth from a homemade rocket.
Saturday's rocket launch was to be featured on the Science Channel, which was chronicling Hughes' attempts to launch himself high enough in a homemade rocket to take pictures of the curvature — or lack thereof as far as Hughes was concerned — of the Earth. This particular launch was only supposed to take Hughes 5,000 feet in the air, according to Discovery.
"Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mike Hughes' family and friends during this difficult time. It was always his dream to do this launch, and Science Channel was there to chronicle his journey," Science Channel said in a statement.
Although police did not positively identify Hughes, San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner Public Information Officer Cindy Bachman said Saturday in a statement, "A man was pronounced deceased after the rocket crashed in the open desert during a rocket launch event. Medical aid was staged for the launch and was on scene immediately."
Hughes had previously completed a successful launch in March 2018, which sent him 1,800 feet in the air.
"The Flat Earth thing is like everything else to me," Hughes told CBS News in October 2018. "I just want people to question everything. Question what your congressman is doing, your city council. Question what really happened during the Civil War. What happened during 9/11."
At the time, Hughes stated that he built his homemade rocket mostly through, "trial and error," and admitted, "You don't get a lot of second chances, though, in the rocket business."
He is now the founding member of the Flat Mike Society.

You have to go something like 20 miles to begin to see earth’s curvature. There’s very little air that high so you’d die without a pressurized cabin or a space suit anyway. There are countless ways to debunk flat earth but no ways to debunk round earth. Occam’s razor.
I wonder if he got high enough up to see the curvature of the earth for himself out the spacecraft window. I doubt it.
But, I’ve got to give some credit to him for developing a steam-powered rocket that got off the ground, even if he had a “ground-breaking” hard landing.

That had to be a pretty gruesome scene for the SB County coroner and law enforcement officials to have to go through!

Michael Hughes could have certainly used that information if he only had it before he launched himself into eternity.
I was in a Lear jet in 1987 that we took to max ceiling of around 51,000 feet

I never heard anything like this from this guy. It makes me think there may have been more about his mission than we realize. Sad to here of this.
All aircraft have a lens built into the windows so the Earth looks round. It is part of the conspiracy. /s

I met a Flat Earther and she was not too bright. She thought the Saturn 5 launches were filmed in a studio.
And the reason he just didn’t go up in an Aircraft to take pictures?
They must be “in” on the conspiracy. So is NASA, of course, all the world’s governments, every rocket scientist, all the airline/shipping companies that use global maps to navigate, all the satellite companies, every company that uses satellites, everyone that has seen a satellite (which is not hard to do), every sailor throughout history who has seen distant ships disappear below the horizon, and our own eyes whenever we see a sunrise or sunset. So why is half the world lying to the other half? That’s the biggest secret of all!

Video of the accident. His parachute deployed right at takeoff, just like Evil Kneveil’s did at the snake river. But this guy’s parachute separated. He followed a ballistic course, right back in front of the camera.
