SACRAMENTO Following a series of sweeping expansions to expand access to voting in recent years, a California lawmaker is pushing to require voters to cast a ballot in future elections.
The proposal, introduced in the state Assembly on Tuesday, would be unprecedented and probably challenged in court should it ultimately become law. It would place the burden for determining the civil penalty and the ultimate punishment on the secretary of state, Californias chief elections officer.
Democracy is not a spectator sport it requires the active participation of all its citizens, the bills author, Assemblyman Marc Levine (D-San Rafael), said in a written statement. California is a national leader on expanding voting rights to its citizens. Those rights come with a responsibility by registered voters to cast their ballot and make sure that their voice is heard by their government.

California has a man named Marc Levine pushing unconstitutional laws and Virginia has Mark Levine doing the same. That is an unusual coincidence.
I wonder if some of the illegals paid to vote ‘D’ have skipped out without voting. As in take the cash and “adios”.
“...California is a national leader on expanding voting rights to its citizens...”
California is a national leader on expanding voting rights TO ILLEGAL ALIENS.
I feel this is totally unconstitutional....this is disenfranchising the rest of us....
Around these parts folks are in a contest to see who can be stupider.
Truth.
Encouraging citizens to vote is one thing, MANDATING it cannot be constitutional. Sounds like the blueprint for Saddam-style voting: you MUST vote and vote the “CORRECT” way...or else.
1-Illegal aliens can get licenses
2-Pass law allowing illegal aliens the ability to vote
3-during licensing, register illegal alien to vote
4-Require everyone to vote
5-Dems ensure themselves a communist state forever
Virginia also has a State Assembly delegate named Mark Levine. He’s a total leftist ahole. Heard him speak. Not bad for a con artist but he’s way to the left.
I see from your records that you registered to vote... but did not cast a ballot. Guards! These men will now take your vote. I hope for your sake that your vote is done correctly.
Marc Levine is an American politician currently serving in the California State Assembly. He is a Democrat representing the 10th Assembly District, which encompasses the North San Francisco Bay Area. Levine is the current Chair of the California Legislative Jewish Caucus.
They are afraid of informed and motivated voters so they want more uninformed voters.
bump
there was a video of the Virginia Mark Levine trying to describe what an “assault rifle” was. It was comical and proved just how dangerous this mutt truly is.
They don't want the voter rolls purged, but they want to make it illegal not to vote? And they're going to make one person, the California Secretary of State responsible for setting the punishment for the violation of not voting?
He says at least 30 countries including Australia, Belgium and Brazil have mandatory voting laws. What is it with these lefties that they want to force the laws of foreign countries on us here? If he wants mandatory voting, then he should go to one of those countries, and leave us the hell alone.
What a jerk. IMO this has no chance of becoming law, but I hate that politicians even think of such stupid ideas - as if there aren’t real problems to solve. This guy is just trying to make a name so he can climb to a new office after his term limit expires (which is one reason why I never supported term limits by law - it allows for ladder climbing and buck passing. Any politician can kick the can down the road and in 2 terms s/he is out and it’s someone else’s problem - that is no way to govern).
Anyway, I believe a citizen has the right of conscientious objection of the entire system and refuse to vote for anyone. It’s not my belief, but that right exists imo. Freedom of association. If I choose to disassociate from politics that is my right and the government cannot force me into it.
That said I think a few democratic countries have such laws. I am pretty sure it is a requirement to vote in Australia - or at least it used to be. Bad idea.
Ultimately if every citizen were required by law to vote, you end up with a system of complete and total pandering retail politics like Andrew Yang “Vote for me and I’ll pay you $1000 a month for life”.
Agreed as long he takes the Virginia Mark Levine with him, the guy in Virginia is trying to pass a bill that would all semi-auto handguns, rifles, shotguns and the revolving shotgun that is made illegal to own. get caught with one and it is a felony.
California wants national popular vote presidential elections while they legalize ballot harvesting, automatically register voters and force them to vote, all while having lax voter ID laws.
It’s very apparent what they’re trying to pull.
How Soviet of them. Are they also going to require who they vote for or is that next?
