EXCLUSIVE: Trump hosts Amish in historic Oval Office visit
The Washington Times ^ | Sunday, December 22, 2019 | S.A. Miller

Posted on 12/30/2019 8:34:25 PM PST by Zhang Fei

President Trump began the holiday break by hosting an Amish delegation in the Oval Office, the first time members of the reclusive community have received that honor.

They might be an odd pairing — the brash and extravagant billionaire president and the humble Amish — but they enjoy a kinship in their Christian faith and work ethic, the Amish visitors told The Washington Times.

“He is a common man just like me and everybody else — very common, very friendly. He called us friends when we walked in there,” said Levi Miller, 56, an Amish farmer from Ohio. “It gets people excited that we have somebody in there who is not afraid to talk about Jesus Christ.”

Mr. Miller was among four Amish businessmen from Ohio who sat down for an exclusive interview with The Times following their Oval Office visit Friday, where they also met Vice President Mike Pence, acting Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney and other top White House officials.

The Amish men described themselves as strong supporters of Mr. Trump and each denounced the House Democrats’ impeachment of the president as a waste of taxpayer money.

“We read the newspaper and it is just ‘impeachment this’ and ‘impeachment that.’ It’s a lot of hogwash,” said Ben Hostetler, 51, a woodworker. “What they are blaming Trump for is what they did themselves.”

The Amish businessmen credit Mr. Trump with fostering a robust economy, protecting religious freedom and adhering to conservative values.

Mr. Miller said the Amish experience the good economic times that Mr. Trump has ushered in, and many will back him in 2020.

“What we see happening at home. Everybody is upbeat. The stock market, everything is up — the economy, the jobs are available,” he said.

They also have cell phones and wireless credit card machines for their businesses but generally won’t be connected via landline.

Usually very shrewd business people. There have been a few investment scams that have taken advantage of the Amish and were perpetrated from people in or around the faith.

I wonder why Mr. Smucker didn’t choose a delegation of Amish from the many Pennsylvania colonies?

He did....as least that is what the local PA papers reported.

One of the best.

I live in a county that was gerrymandered by the SCOPA in an attempt to oust Scott Perry, so while I lost Scott I gained Lloyd.

Had long talk with him in a restaurant with some local officials shortly before the 2018 election--he is one of the few politicians who actually maintains eye contact and listens to you rather than scanning to room to find someone more important to engage.

We need to keep the President in our prayers every day.
Evil never sleeps and in the spiritual war, neither should we.

A good friend of mine is ex Amish. He’s now a born again Christian. He told me that the rules are very flexible and are set by the local bishop.

They can ride but not drive. I know Amish builders who own trucks and hire drivers.

There are all kinds of workarounds.

Some friends and I were talking last night about how the Amish delivered Pennsylvania for trump.

“Stock Market? Amish? Who knew ;)”

Interesting. Even if they themselves might not invest, they know that most of the people who hire them do. More money for the clients = more work for them.

There are lots of Amish in my area, they have their faults, for sure, but most work hard and almost all have a trade/skill rather than just trying to collect a check.

Wonderful story, AW. Huge Amish population in our area as well, but less informed and involved.

I don’t know about Ohio Amish, but in NE Iowa, there are two kinds-the regular Amish, the guys who built Amana Industries, and the Old Order Amish. The regular guys don’t mind using some modern tools, in particular those related to raising livestock and crops, and preserving them (hence Amana refrigerators). It’s real easy to tell when you drive through an Old Order area. There are no power or phone lines. That’s where you also find these little Amish “convenience” stores, where the locals sell their excess produce and simple goods to each other and the lucky tourists who find one.

This area is quite different from the Amana Colonies tourist area found near Iowa City. That’s nice to visit, but not very Amish. Just south of there is a large Mennonite community with the best bakeries ever.

“I’ve seen many Amish that have cell phones but do not keep them in their homes, they will put them in a shed or such and retrieve it when they go about their day of work.”

You know, at first blush a lot of this seems totally arbitrary and mostly irrational and inconsistent, but the more I think about it, the more I wonder if it wouldn’t be a bad idea to build a shed to keep my kids’ cell phones hidden away about 20 hours a day!
