Notre Dame rector: Fragile cathedral might not be saved

The rector of Notre Dame Cathedral says the Paris landmark is still so fragile that there’s a “50% chance” the structure might not be saved, because scaffolding installed before this year’s fire is threatening the vaults of the Gothic monument.

Monsignor Patrick Chauvet said restoration work isn’t likely to begin until 2021 — and described his “heartache” that Notre Dame couldn’t hold Christmas services this year, for the first time since the French Revolution.

“Today it is not out of danger,” he told The Associated Press on the sidelines of Christmas Eve midnight Mass in a nearby church. “It will be out of danger when we take out the remaining scaffolding.”

“Today we can say that there is maybe a 50% chance that it will be saved. There is also 50% chance of scaffolding falling onto the three vaults, so as you can see the building is still very fragile,” he said.

The 12th-century cathedral was under renovation at the time of the accidental April fire, which destroyed its roof and collapsed its spire. With no more roof to keep the massive stone structure stable, the cathedral’s surviving vaults are crucial to keeping it standing, but they are vulnerable.

I expect it will remain a ruin.

What a stupid tragedy.

Plus given the intense desire of the post-modernists and Muslims to obliterate our Christian history, it will a miracle indeed.

Mark each stone, tear it down to sound structure, then rebuild with new mortar replacing each stone in it’s original position.

It is worth it.

Coincidence. Didn’t you hear? Sparks at two different locations just happened around the same time.

Odd that.

Never mind the man walking on the roof.

The French do not possess the national will nor faith to do what was done hundreds of years ago by its original builders. All the technology in the world cannot overcome the lack thereof.

“A short-circuit might have caused the fire. Some suggested causes of the fire include a short-circuit from the spire’s electric bells, or an elevator, or cigarette butts left by workers.”

Did we ever find out the cause of the fire?

I don't remember seeing anything conclusive. In fact, last I paid attention to all officials were tap-dancing around presenting any evidence to the public.

That fire was likely a sign from God about his displeasure with the commie phony pope.

Yes, that’s a good example of how this can be done with a ‘can do’ attitude which the French seem to lack.

Time-lapse images taken by a camera installed by them showed smoke first rising from the base of the spire.

Here's my issue.

The fire department was alerted by an alarm. When they arrived they searched the building and apparently found neither a fire or smoke. They left only to return later to a raging fire.

WHAT DID THEY MISS? How complete was the search that they didn't find smoldering, a fire, or smoke?

Either they were sloppy in their search or someone was in the building when they left and started the fire.
