Three proposed rule changes by the Trump administration could cause millions of poor people to lose access to food stamps and decrease the size of the benefit for millions more.
Over the past year, the Department of Agriculture proposed three changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, known as SNAP or food stamps. The new rules create stricter work requirements for program eligibility, cap deductions for utility allowances and "reform" the way 40 states automatically enroll families into SNAP when they receive other forms of federal aid.
A study by the Urban Institute released this week examined the three rules in combination for the first time and found that 3.7 million fewer people would receive SNAP in an average month, 2.2 million households would see their average monthly benefits drop by $127, more than 3 million others would see an average drop of $37 per month, and 982,000 students would lose access to free or reduced lunches.

You know I think people would be more supportive of SNAP if it really operated as it was intended. But that would mean no piling your cart with foods the average middle class family can’t afford. It would mean boxes of chocs were out and bags of rice and beans were in. It makes little sense to tighten eligibility if additional reforms to the program aren’t implemented. Because it may not change overall spending if high cost food items are still allowed.
Well, to be fair you need a valid phone number to get any job, even a job at McDonald’s.
Kind of a catch 22. It’s not the kid’s fault his mother sells her food stamps and uses the money for fake nails, weaves, or drugs. If she cared about her child, she wouldn’t do that (or a lot of other things). There are several subcultures in America, that only God can change. Unfortunately, the people involved have to want to change. We didn’t get in this mess overnight, and it’s not going to go away overnight, either. BTW, IMHO, able bodied adults should be made to do without, if they won’t get out and get a job.
You’re mean. They might chip a nail!/sarc
My first husband worked at a housing project. Green Giant would donate truckloads of frozen foods, most of which went into the dumpster, after the distribution day would end. “That white people food. We don’t eat that!” Sometimes, he’d dig some out of the dumpster and bring it home. It was foods we couldn’t afford to buy, like toaster pastries, vegetables in cheese sauce, high end side dishes.
There are plenty of daycares (of course many of them are subsidized, too). I stayed home with my kids for years. My husband didn’t want me to work, so we just did without. I went back to school and work when our youngest was in kindergarten. My beautiful grandbaby is sick right now, because he picked up some kind of crud at daycare. But my daughter and her husband both work, to provide for their kids.
Currently, there are dozens of means-tested benefit programs, administered by dozens of agencies, making it easier to bury the total value of benefits a person gets.
What’s needed is to merge all these programs into one agency, institute a dollar cap, and require biometric identification to get any benefit, to include iris scan and facial scan. Fingerprints too.
This story is confusing— says changes in SNAP rules may force people to choose between paying for food & paying for housing.
I’ve always heard homeless people cannot get food stamps—
and most other benefits as well— because they don’t have an address.
Can someone clarify?
Now if we could just follow through by eliminating all “entitlements” on the way to eliminating all agencies, bureaus, and departments back to the original 4...
Yeah, but these are 14 year olds. They aren't working.
Cross-communication does happen somewhat I think, but what I suspect is that of claiming to be the sole provider for the kids while hiding the BF (or GF), while some also run a daycare and or part-time catering business.
However, the determination of being in need of food stamps is not based upon a lack of food, but on the invented condition called "food insecurity." And as an investigation I myself did and posted a while back helped reveal how the numbers were arrived at via craftily contrived questions.

Oh, you mean those grossly overweight folks loading up on filet mignon, dragon fruit and other expensive stuff on our dime? Then taking it home in a late model car? The ones I usually see whipping out an EBT card? Trump can eliminate food stamps for those grifters with my blessing.
I thought that they (Michelle Obama) cut food stamps to help pay for more school lunches.
I didn’t hear them cry when Moochelle said “Barack Obama will require you to work. He is going to demand that you shed your cynicism. That you put down your divisions. That you come out of your isolation, that you move out of your comfort zones. That you push yourselves to be better. And that you engage. Barack will never allow you to go back to your lives as usual, uninvolved, uninformed.” ???
exactly the same thing I see too
yep I know one of them in GA who is supposed to be working on Fridays at ho9me and yet never does.
Of course, the Fake News doesnt point out that specifically ABLE-BODIED persons with NO DEPENDENTS who are GENERATIONAL welfare cheats will have a work requirement. And oh, the huge manatee, they have to work 20 hours per week!
BOO HOO, SNIFF SNIFF, WEEP WEEP!!
Im sorry, I cant talk anymore, the cruelty and inhuge manatee have crushed my spirit. I need to go lie down for awhile.
No, I agree this generational welfare crap needs to cease. As long as the liberals seek to give away everything the working class earn things will never change.
