Trump administration proposal endangers food stamps for millions
NBC News ^ | Nov 30, 2019 | Phil McCausland

Three proposed rule changes by the Trump administration could cause millions of poor people to lose access to food stamps and decrease the size of the benefit for millions more.

Over the past year, the Department of Agriculture proposed three changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, known as SNAP or food stamps. The new rules create stricter work requirements for program eligibility, cap deductions for utility allowances and "reform" the way 40 states automatically enroll families into SNAP when they receive other forms of federal aid.

A study by the Urban Institute released this week examined the three rules in combination for the first time and found that 3.7 million fewer people would receive SNAP in an average month, 2.2 million households would see their average monthly benefits drop by $127, more than 3 million others would see an average drop of $37 per month, and 982,000 students would lose access to free or reduced lunches.

I teach in Los Angeles. The kids get all these free meals, and every single one of them has a phone.

Charles Payne was talking about food stamps the other day on FBN. He was raised in poverty in Harlem and said that everyone knew everyone else was on food stamps, but they had the good sense to be embarrassed about it. If was buying something for his mother with food stamps and saw someone he knew, he’d walk away until he could make the purchase without being noticed.

He said that now it’s completely different. People brag about it.

Conveniently, the article fails to mention (from the report):

“Non-Hispanic white and Asian households would be somewhat more likely than other racial and ethnic groups to lose eligibility or benefits under the proposed changes to BBCE and SUAs. The estimated likelihood of eligibility loss from the proposed ABAWD changes differs little among racial and ethnic groups.”

I don’t know what the big deal is. Mayor Bloomberg from NYC is proposing the same thing only using taxes.

I always think of the old Eddie Murphy “Ice Cream Man” routine

“You don’t have no ice cream, you didn’t get none, you didn’t get none, you didn’t get none...............cause you are on the welfare, you can’t afford it, you can’t afford it”.

A friend of mine used to volunteer at a food bank at a local church. She also worked nights at a convenience store a few blocks away from the church. She became quite disillusioned when so many of the people using the food bank would show up at her convenience store and use EBT to buy junk food, soda and beer and use spare cash to buy lottery tickets. She said she got into quite a few arguments with liberals at the food bank when she told them their handouts just might be encouraging these people to stay in a cycle of poverty and dependence. She eventually stopped volunteering at the food bank. She also left her job because she found it so frustrating to see people buying junk with their EBT cards while she was actually working to try to make ends meet.

The teatsuckers currently receive MORE in tax free benefits than people in the workforce receive for WORKING, and then have to pay taxes on it. I hope these moves by POTUS bring the career teatsuckers down to at least a par with the working class.

Maybe those “millions” should go home and demand food stamps and lots of other free stuff from their own governments.

AMEN!!

Trump should also put restrictions on what EBT cards can buy. Nothing but real food and no restaurants.

Agree!!!!

Bread, four, sugar, cheese, milk and eggs. That’s it.

Now they (SNAP folks) just order online....no more cart shaming!!

I saw a decal on the Walmart dairy case door reminding these SNAPers that they could now easily order their goodies online.

Online, with their 0bammy phones and internet paid for by you and I.

Oh noes, people will have to go out and contribute to society instead of living off the labor or others.

I have questioned for YEARS whether there is ANY cross-communication between the Schools free lunches & the Welfare food stamps.

I am convinced that ‘MAMA’ with kids is getting food stamps based on X number of mouths to feed times 3 meals a day times 7 days a week...year around. The days that those same kids spend in school getting meals there is never offset—either direction. Double dipping at the least.

For every single meal that her kids get for free is a duplication of the food stamps.

I have never found an answer to my question.

The article acts as though millions of the single mothers (how did that happen) who are using “SNAP” aren’t putting $200+ Nikes on their kids feet.

And everything else you said is true too.

Correction to my previous post... The people would use EBT to buy junk food and soda and use spare cash to buy beer and lottery tickets. (Correction to show you can’t use EBT to buy alcohol.)

It isn’t rocket science to slice a potato and fry it up. A 14.75 oz bag of Lay’s chips is $3.98 plus tax at Walmart.com. A 10 lb bag of russet potatoes is $3.15 non taxable at the grocery store. That comes to 11 homemade bags or a savings of around $40. Chips and junk food shouldn’t be allowed on EBTs.

there are at least 6 places within 3 miles that give out entire boxes of food for free, no questions asked, and you get to choose your foods too (just like at the pay your own way grocery stores)

plus, a couple free cooked meals anyone welcome lunch/dinner places

ps: the parking lot at the nearest shop and fill up your car for free place.....is full. with ALL NEW CARS. no old or dented or faded vehicles anywhere in the lot (about 200 cars or more)
