I’m sorry I didn’t make it clear that I am not the young mother of Adam and adopter of Brandy. The story belongs to a woman named Sara Whalen. I adopted my Basset mix from her sprawling animal refuge in the Catskills. Hers was a no kill shelter and many retired police horses found their homes there too. Sara ignored the signs of illness and died of undiagnosed cancer several years ago. Rob Thomas, the singer, has taken on keeping this shelter going.
Aw. What a good life Dusty Joe had with your family. The Rainbow Bridge is real. I can’t wait to cross it one day and find my beloved Buddy “Dupadoo” waiting patiently for me.

My mom put 5 year old me and my 3 year old sis on leashes. Of course, we were on a Navy ship heading for Japan where my dad was stationed.
I did that in Massachusetts long, long ago.
I knew where I was, too.
Boy, were people angry.
When I was 2, I was sitting at the kitchen table while my Mom was at the sink then I was outside on the sharply sloping second-floor porch roof.
To her dying day, she said it was impossible for me to reach the window, open it and walk down the slope and sit down and watch the cars below.
I have heard child rescuers say that kids often go up while adults go down.

While we never did it, having experienced the terror of thinking you’ve lost a child would be enough to make me think about it. (Of course my kids are all grown men now, but I do have a grand daughter)
