The frantic search for a missing 2-year-old girl lost in the Oregon wilderness had a happy ending after the toddler was found safe by a woman on horseback and her dog. Tammy Stevens, 59, of Beaverton, was out for a ride Thursday morning with her horse, Bo, and her dogs, Wilson and Maddie, miniature Australian Shepherds, when she joined the search for the missing girl, according to Sgt. Marcus Mendoza, a spokesman for the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office. Little Iris Nix was walking with her grandmother on a trail in the Molalla River Recreation Area when she ran ahead and out of sight, Mendoza said. He said as Stevens scouted terrain she described as steep and dangerous, she heard a child crying. “I said to Wilson, ‘Go get her and show me the way,’” Stevens said in a recorded interview with a deputy. “Wilson was climbing for her so I tied Bo up and then climbed up, really steep, super steep, about 70 feet and there she was,” she said. “She was pretty upset.” Iris was out for a walk with her grandmother Gayla Ann Jay, 62, of Molalla, and a sibling, when she disappeared. Her grandmother looked for 15 minutes and then summoned help from loggers passing by. "Yeah, 15 minutes I could tolerate. After 15 minutes I started to lose it," Gayla told Fox 12 Oregon. Iris was lost in the wood for about two hours. “It was a really good story,” Stevens said. “I’m so thankful.”

A toddler climbed up a 70-foot steep incline? Something about this seems odd. I wish the story had more detail.
It is surprising how quickly a two year old can suddenly disappear when they wander off. Thank goodness they found her.
Steep...likely just the route the rescuer was taking and not the route the toddler took.
It was the person who found her that climbed up the face of the hillside. The toddler may have started at the top, then got scared. The article is not clear on that point.

Our 2 yr old grand toddler can go up one of my bookcases. She has been discovered standing on the kitchen counter tops trying to get to the crackers. She’s about 30 months old and we MUST always keep an eye on her. Thank God we can always call and tell her Mom we’re running out of gas, break times over and come and get her. Of course as a grandfather, I love ever minute of the time I spend with her. Thank God and be alert.
Or maybe the path she took to get to there was not up the 70’ incline. That just turned out to be the quickest way to get to her where she ended up is a real possibility.
I have heard several stories of wandering children ending up on cliffs and embankments, makes me wonder if there is something in our brain that tells us to go up. After chasing my 2 year old grandson yesterday I am of the opinion it would be easy for a toddler to go up a 70’ incline and would be the most likely place to look. Toddlers are something else, I had forgotten.
How was she on horseback and her dog at same time?

Our 2 year old grandson is the same way. No end to his energy and try anything personality. Sounds like it is a good thing he and your grand daughter will not be getting together. Chasing two of them would take a crew.
I know what you mean! One of my grandsons is 2 and can climb up anything. In the family we call him “free solo”. In reality, though, it is very scary b/c he can get to things he shouldn’t (pill bottles, etc) My son and his wife have to lock him in his room at night b/c otherwise he gets up early in the morning and is wandering around the house when no one else is up. I think about those kids you read reports about where a small child wanders away from their backyard and is found a mile away in a bush or something. I used to think, “how does no one know where this kid is?” and now I get it.
You got that right! When our oldest was about 4 years old, we were at the New Mexico state fair with his. I thought my wife had his hand and she thought I did. In a matter of seconds "poof" he was gone! The panic was sheer! Luckily we found him after a few minutes of panic! I can understand why some parents put their toddlers on a leash!
My husband’s nephews were always climbing and perching on top of chest of drawers and dressers at that age. Story is totally believable.
Heck, at about that age I climbed to the third story of a granary (small barn) and leaned out the window to throw ears of corn. ‘Bout gave my mom a heart attack.
My 3 yr old disappeared at Virginia beach on July 4. We found her 1/2 mile down the beach playing with other children.
As the mother of 4 children, even reading that story just about gives me a heart attack!

Probably there is. Taking the high ground is a better defensive measure.
