McConnell: If House Impeaches President Trump, Senate Must Have Trial
Gateway Pundit ^ | 09/27/2019 | Cristina Laila

Posted on 09/27/2019 2:35:38 PM PDT by LibertyWoman

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) on Friday said that if the House of Representatives were to impeach President Trump, the Senate “has no choice” and would have to go to trial right away.

McConnell told NPR on Friday that “if the House were to act, the Senate immediately goes into a trial.”

...

At the time of this publication, 12 House Democrats do not support impeachment proceedings (but I bet there are a few rinos that do. Comment added)

” Now he says it’s his duty to hold a trial in the Senate if the majority in the House impeach Trump.”

It is his duty. Unless the change the rules.

If this even gets to a vote in the Senate and they vote for impeachment, civil war will break out and that is the end of the Republican party. I don’t think (hope) the Senate Republicans want that on their hands.

This might not be a bad thing. Trump’s defense can bring a lot of witnesses to testify under oath.

Think Comey, Brennan, Clapper, Strzok, Ohr, Hillary, Glenn Simpson, etc...

Trent Lott put on a very abbreviated trial with a predetermined outcome.

I always marvel at the long-suffering patience of patriots, the calm, measured responses, etc. They’ve taken so much verbal and physical abuse, direct threats to their well-being and safety. At what point a “spark” changes that reserve is anyone’s guess.

Working nicely within the a corrupt system doesn’t seem to be draining and restoring it at a pace needed for successful completion before the end of POTUS’s term.

Sort of like Dole did for Clinton? Right Mitch?

Dole left the Senate in 1996. Clinton's impeachment trial occurred in 1999, presided over by Chief Justice William Rehnquist, ending with final votes on guilt or innocence on both articles of impeachment that they were sent.

As am I. I can't wait to go to the polls to vote against the Democrats.

And to those of you who sat out 2018 or voted third party because you didn't like the GOP candidate, thanks for giving the Democrats the House so they could put us through this.

I agree that anything can happen, but I would hope that even the most rabid RINO Trump haters in the Senate know that removing Trump would effectively destroy the Republican party. If the party wants to remain viable, they’d better do the right thing here.

I think that the Senate has to address it one way or the other. iow it can't be ignored but McConnell's declaration that the Senate would have to "immediately" hold a trial was incorrect. He is implying that a trial would happen a.s.a.p when he knows damn well there are things the Senate must do 'prior' to a trial.

And he was talking with NPR of all outlets...

I never have trusted McConnell either. The only good thing he's done is regarding President Trump's judicial nominees and even that seem to slow (at times) to a snail's pace.

From the US Constitution...

The President, Vice President and all civil Officers of the United States, shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors.

There is nothing, absolutely NOTHING that says the Senate must engage in an impeachment trial just because the House sends it to them. NOTHING.

McConnell was always a rotting piece of establishment dung.

Currently 54- 46
with 30 Republicans voting FOR its 24-76 for Conviction - Removal about the same - welcome President Pense - until he too is either defeated at the polls or similarly impeached, removed - then please welcome President Pelosi.
