Food Crisis 2019: An Outbreak Of African Swine Fever Is Devastating Global Pig Population
TMIN The Most Important News ^ | April 3, 2019 | Michael T. Snyder

Posted on 04/04/2019 10:03:00 AM PDT by LucyT

An absolutely devastating disease is wiping out herds of pigs all over Asia, and most people in the western world don’t even realize what is happening. Since it was first detected last August, there have been 116 officially reported outbreaks of African Swine Fever in China, and since that time it has rapidly spread to surrounding nations such as Cambodia and Vietnam.

African Swine Fever is not harmful to humans, but the vast majority of the pigs that catch it end up dead. It spreads very quickly and there is no cure, and this outbreak has already driven global pork prices through the roof.

Infectious Disease - Pork ->African Swine Fever - ASF (virus) - China/ Viet Nam / Romania (EU)

African swine fever (ASF) is a highly contagious disease manifesting clinical symptoms of hemorrhagic fever caused by African swine fever virus (ASFV)
and leads to almost 100% mortality in domestic pigs.

The highly contagious disease, which is incurable in pigs but harmless to humans,
has spread rapidly across neighboring China since August, and has been found in seven areas in Vietnam,
the state-run Vietnam News Service reported.

(A) its infectious, ..but not to humans (that we know of)
(B) the price of pork will probably sky-rocket
(C) the last I knew, the Chinese own the largest pork producers in the US (Hillshire Farms)

knarf:" All we need is one evil bastard to come across our border carrying a sample and apply for a job at a piggery."

It's a virus, and highly contagious.
It can be tracked into the US pork production by workers shoes.
Infection could start by an amount less than the period at the end of this sentence.
We are talking microns, ..not millimeters.

The largest pork producer, Smithfield Foods is now owned by the Chinese. I’m sure they don’t want the hurting US production.

I didn’t see where the differentiated domestic from wild. A reduction in the wild population wouldn’t be a bad thing.

We should all care. This time next year when prices get way out of control.

Australia just had hundreds of thousands of cattle die off in massive flooding.

The US Plains have lost untold millions of bushels of grain/crops/livestock due to massive flooding.

Swine fever if pigs.

Dairy Farms folding and filing bankruptcy by the hundreds so far in 2019.

The Agriculture and Food Production Industry worldwide is getting hammered this year.

Plus the Nebraska flood.

Also, there is going to be a lot of late plantings if the farmers can even get into their fields.

Agreed. Everyone should care.

The Chinese bought Smithfield, the largest US pork producer.
Hillshire was bought by Sara Lee.

If I’m correct.

And they most assuredly would be willing to hurt themselves if they thought it would hurt us worse.

I noticed that as you click the links in his articles to other stories he wrote, the dates have been removed and upon further investigation, they are 7 years old.

I’m fortunate to live in a place where I can buy meat on the hoof from a man that I trust.

I put half a beef in the freezer last Saturday. Come fall I’ll buy a hog and have it made into breakfast sausage.

One of these days the commercial food supply chain is going to collapse. Things will be very ugly for awhile after that happens. TEOTWAWKI, you might say.

Until then we do our best to be ready when that day arrives.

Exactly ! That's what our grandparents used to do -> prepping for 'uncertain times'.
They prepped for for illness (herbals)and for physical disruptions (famine, drought), and were forcefully independent.
Is it inconvenient, heck yes.
But, they planned, in advance, of any probable disruptions of their life style.
That's how they survived and prospered .. not waiting for the government to offer assistance
whether or not it arrived, or, not.

Pork is the least expensive meat in the grocery store so guess it’s time Big Pork raises the price for whatever reason.

Several years ago during the drought when ranchers were selling off their cattle, beef prices rose instead of decreasing. That’s not logical but it happened none the less.

I’ve been marathon watching all the History Channel’s “Alone” shows. A large percent of survival types don’t last a week. Imagine that against all the little clueless wimps when their cell phones die and the drive thru window hangs up a closed sign.

I’d been planning to raise a few feeder pigs this year. Sounds like I need to get that pen built, fast!
