I remember Condi Rice muttering about giving up the Golan as the “right thing to do.”

About damn time we had a President that didn’t want to handcuff Israel and force her to endure bombs from their own area...that was wrested from Syria to stop their using it as a launch platform ... and the UN and others have been trying to keep Israel from establishing it as actual property for a long time...to aid and abet the terrorists who use it to attack her.

I’m a Conservative, not on board with a Western Country trying to “gift” occupied land to Israel for Genie Energy.
Genie Energy’s Strategic advisory board is composed of: Dick Cheney , Rupert Murdoch, James Woolsey, Larry Summers, Bill Richardson, Michael Steinhardt, Jacob Rothschild, and Mary Landrieu.

There was a joke going around that, rather than going to war, Israeli would have sold them the property had they asked. No way this was about Golan, though. LOL

It may have been the Gaza then. But Condi worked to get it done and they gave the land away to the enemy.

You are thinking of the Gaza Strip down by Egypt. That area has always been predominantly Palestinian - about 2 million people or so. There were some small settltements that had to be abandoned. I remember the "settlers" being dragged from their homes on the news when this happened. Israel allows Gaza to self govern but all its electricity comes from Israel. There has been an air and sea blockade of Gaza since day one and there is no freedom of movement into or out of Gaza for obvious reasons. This occurred in 2004 or 2005 - I can't remember.
However, this was proposed by Israeli PM Sharon, a known dove, and approved by the Knesset. Bush supported it.
I think it is fair to say this was a mistake for all kinds of reasons.
The Golan Heights is completely different. It borders Syria and is a very strategic area for Israel because it overlooks Syria. Israel won it back for the first time in the 6 Day War in 1967 and would never give it up for any reason.

I think it was the land returned to Egypt following the 1967 war.
