Vice Admiral Scott Stearney, the Navy’s top officer overseeing forces in the Middle East, died Saturday in what defense officials now call an “apparent suicide," CBS News reports .

Stearney, who was the commander of the military branch’s Fifth Fleet in Bahrain, was found dead in his residence, the Navy confirmed earlier on Saturday. Paul Schlise, the deputy commander of Fifth Fleet, will assume command in his place.

The Naval Criminal Investigative Service is investigating Stearney's death in addition to the Bahraini Ministry of Interior.

However, Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson said in a statement that "no foul play is suspected" in his death.

He also called his death “devastating news” for Stearney’s family, the Fifth Fleet team “and for the entire Navy.”

“Scott Stearney was a decorated naval warrior," Richardson continued. "He was a devoted husband and father, and he was a good friend to all of us."

Stearney joined the Navy in 1982 and served for 36 years.

The admiral oversaw thousands of U.S. sailors and other forces as commander of the Navy's Fifth Fleet and served previously as the operations director of U.S. Central Command, as well as chief of staff for joint task forces in Afghanistan.

I think that is a reasonable possibility. Extra money for making favorable decisions.

Are you thinking of the indictments of execs that were also donors to Obama for America and the Clinton Foundation who ran shipments f goods for our troops through Iranian ports ?

Their company did have a Bahrain office of course...also a Virginia one.

One wonders what he knew about Clinton corruption. Strange correlation between that and suicides....

When I hear suicide these days, I immediately think of the high suicide rate amongst lgbt and trans.

That’s what I was wondering...I’m not aware of any connection other than the timing, though.

Their case involved a contract in 2012 but they had shady deals prior

“Fat Leonard” was a huge scandal so I am surprised that I was unaware of it. More than the foreign “Fat Leonard,” the bad guys are the corrupt American military personnel who were involved with him.

Anecdotal, but the guy was a fighter pilot. My father was a fighter pilot and after he was grounded for his eyesight, he was never happy and put in for retirement shortly after. He was even less thrilled with civilian life.

Fighter pilots are like pro athletes who live for the thrill and the spotlight. Once that’s gone, many have a hard time adjusting. I’m not saying that’s what happened here, but it’s possible this Admiral didn’t like flying a desk or what his life was like after Mach 2.5.

Was this one of those 5 shots to the back of the head suicide?

IDK but something seems off.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fat_Leonard_scandal

Biggest Navy scandal this century and possibly ever considering the number of flag officers that went down.
