“..living on a boat in the Caribbean can be very dangerous with evil people with guns out to kill you and take all you have?”

Having plied the ocean waves myself, I can attest that the Caribbean is rather ruthless in dealing with lone boaters, and that includes the local constabulary. The coast of Africa can get a little dicey with the piracy going on there particularly on the east coast of Africa, and then there’s Indonesia... The Straits of Malacca & several other places.

In summary, there are real life Pirates that will steal your lunch and pop your bag in a heartbeat. And while in Port in various spots around the globe the thievery will denude your boat of any technology, food, safety gear, Tools, & Fuel while you’re out sauntering about town enjoying the sunset with crappy water in a bottle.

It sure took Fielding a long time to say he was a malcontent. This guy has no sense of success. He, only, sees failure as an option.

Do we have our problems, yes. Every country does. Every person does. But running away from them tells me he has no spine to improve something. If you don’t like a law, get together with others like you and get rid of it. If you don’t like a politician, vote them out. But it doesn’t make any sense to go to another place because you don’t like the one you’re in that has millions of people trying, to the point of death, to get here in it. And here you can do something they can’t there, you can bitch about what is wrong rather than being killed trying to change it. (Unless you piss off the Clintons) You pitch one in your new digs and you may be right, dead right. But I guess that solves your problem anyway, doesn’t it?

...Michael Fielding recently graduated from the University of Texas with a BS in Computer Science. After which he headed to the Caribbean aboard his boat, Sovereignty. As of this update, he is in Miami preparing for the journey across the Gulf Stream to the Bahamas. He describes himself as a full-time thinker and adventurer...

I have baseball caps with more life experience than this.

My family was a Colorado family from the homestead in Cheyenne Wells where my mother and her 8 siblings were born 100 years ago. I left in the 70s and have only been back a couple of times for a few days. Every visit was more depressing than the last. My cousin’s wife’s family were the original settlers in Parker when it was a “big town”. Last week in the waiting room here in Virginia I overheard to families talking about how much nicer it is here in VA than California where they had both left. The cancer is everywhere.

Eh, for a 22 year old college grad, not too bad of an opus to the USA. Someone did tell him that the US taxes overseas income too, right? Man, bet there’s going to be another 2,000 words about that too.

Only 30 years early for his midlife crisis too; certainly an overachiever. I’ll give it a 7/10 for the opus. Hope he didn’t burn his passport...

Bahamas, actually but with his superior intellect he may well end up in Cuba.

As of this update, he is in Miami preparing for the journey across the Gulf Stream to the Bahamas. He describes himself as a full-time thinker and adventurer.

And with his limited knowledge of open ocean sailing ... hope he makes it ‘cause then his real adventure will begin ... the Caribbean is no place to find a better life and could be among the worst.

He’ll come limping back at some point ... if he survived.

Never, never deliberately go looking for ‘adventure’ as the adventure you get may well not be the one you want ... or survive.

In the sailing world, this is considered crossing the street.

Government is force almost by definition. That’s why it’s good to keep it small and limited. Government is a necessary evil and we shouldn’t worship it like leftists do. But at the same time we shouldn’t freak out over its essential nature and become anarchists and/or cranks. My impression is this guy read some Ayn Rand or something and took it a little too far.

1977 was the year Journey released their third album, and the last one before Steve Perry joined the group.

The person who wrote this strikes me as having lived an incredibly sheltered existence, but as you and I both know, the world is full of cures for that.

Well if you can find a better country then go there. Rather than staying and trying/helping to fix the problem you want to bail.

I’d be interested in knowing just where the hell he plans to go, and why he imagines that those “problems” won’t exist there too.

It sounds like he can’t live in any complex society. The USA is certainly complex. Maybe he’s going to a tribe in the Amazon. He’ll be unpleasantly surprised to know that they have rules, taboos, hypocrisy and coercion there too.

The problem is with older folks.. we remember.. we lived in a different time and world than it is today! It’s shocking to see the changes and the acceptance of such.

Polite consideration - rude and obnoxious behavior
Truth - Lies very much abound and are accepted as the way it is today.
Honesty - take all you can however you can.
Your word was your honor, your bond - you have no honor, it’s get what you can in any way you can.
Holding our kids responsible - no, my kid wouldn’t do that.
Taking responsibility for our own actions - the gov or someone else did it.
Teaching right from wrong - do whatever
Keeping sex and foul language private - It’s all out in the open and more than normal stuff our kids are exposed to at such an early age.
Bible in schools - no Bible and no Jesus in public schools.
Respect - no respect
Learning from your elders - don’t want to be around old people.. get lost.

Just an example of what is and what used to be. It’s disheartening and depressing if ya’ think on it very long.
It’s not for the better of our country... but the young people who do not know what it used to be... don’t know what it could be to live in the greatest nation ever... as it was when life meant something and respect was the rule.
