Gunmen dressed as mariachi musicians kill 4, wound 9 in Mexico City tourist area

The shooting cast a bloody pall over Independence Day festivities. Many Mexicans will wear mariachi costumes, a symbol of national pride, on Saturday night to commemorate the launch of the revolt against Spanish rule on Sept. 16, 1810. It is also the busiest time of year for Garibaldi Plaza, a beloved but seedy square that draws heavily on Mexican folklore.

Lisa Sanchez, director of Mexicans United Against Delinquency, described the shooting as a "piercing portrait" of Mexico. The shooting in a crowded public square demonstrates that impunity prevails in the country, she said.

Business quickly resumed around the square following the shooting. Videos circulating on social media showed musicians in the plaza playing their music around the time of the shooting, without skipping a beat.

In one video, a man plucking a large harp continues to belt out the Mexican civil war anthem "La Cucaracha" as dozens of gunshots can be heard in the background.

In another, brass instruments and melancholic voices fill the air as the flashing lights of police vehicles descend on the plaza. Patrons continued to down tequilas and tuck into tacos.

At the Tenampa cantina, which bills itself as having first brought mariachi troupes to the plaza in the 1920s, a manager said it was business as usual Saturday.

Messy-co is a big ol cesspool. Always has been, likely always will be. If I were king for a day, I'd build the wall, sink it 15ft into the ground. I'd erect the thing 50ft tall, 5ft thick. On the backside, a mote filled with Louisiana gators, a minefield, rows of coiled barbed wire and trained attack dogs. Every so often, guard towers manned with 50cals.

That ought to do-r

It would be cheaper and more effective to just begin to shoot the invaders. Dead invaders are not a problem.

Fear of death will stop invasion.

“The shooting cast a bloody pall over Independence Day festivities. “

Almost as bad as Chicago on the 4th of July.

Woman? Children? Old men?

Hmmmmm.

Ya know, it’s not the average dirt poor Mexican that is to blame. It is our government.

No.

For some reason, Campa had a monkey.

As if he was not badass enough without one.

Interestingly, the guy who payed Campa in Desperado, the sequel to El Mariachi, played El Mariachi in the original.

And sadly, the guy who played Quino is dead.

I had to chuckle at that line.

I play senior softball and there's a guy in the group who is a total, ignorant and obnoxious jerk.

The joke is, if the a-hole drops dead of a heart attack on the field, just drag his ass off to the side line and keep playing and call the EMS between innings...........LOL!
