George F. Will: Ocasio-Cortez could learn a thing or two about socialism from Trump
SALT LAKE TRIBUNE ^ | 28 JULY 2018 | GEORGE WILL - WASHINGTON POST

Posted on 07/28/2018 8:44:04 PM PDT by Extremely Extreme Extremist

Washington • For three months in 1917, Leon Trotsky lived in the Bronx, just south of the congressional district where Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez recently defeated a 10-term incumbent in a Democratic primary. Because she calls herself a democratic socialist, the word “socialism” is thrilling progressives who hanker to storm the Bastille, if only America had one. And the word has conservatives darkly anticipating the domestic equivalent of the Bolsheviks storming St. Petersburg’s Winter Palace 101 years ago, if there is an equivalent building in the eastern Bronx and northern Queens. Never mind that only about 16,000 voted for Ocasio-Cortez’s version of “Arise, ye prisoners of starvation!”

I don’t see how Trump has demonstrated that he believes the sovereignty of the individual is subordinate to that of the state. He is not perfect by any means but given the immense number of enemies arrayed against him he is kicking serious ass.

Is he still alive? What could he have said that possibly is relevant?

He’s right. Trump is a total statist. He’s a crony capitalist & it will doom us all.

Oh the conceit of the doctrinaire policy wonks. I can't believe someone is still holding on to these old chestnuts.

Concluding Donald Trump is a "statist" because he doesn't approve of some little old lady standing in the way of a huge civic project is as asinine as concluding any woman who claims to be a feminist is also a lesbian.

And if, indeed, he is a "crony capitalist," where are his patrons? Certainly, his enemies are a veritable "who's who" of those we credit with defiling our "shining city on a hill," so if he's a "crony capitalist" who are these "crony's" and how have they actually been a detriment to America?

Or could it be you're just trafficking in knee-jerk, buzz-words, either not knowing what they actually mean, or simply relying on their past success in causing a negative reaction?

If what we've seen so far is Trump's version of doom: bring on the zombie apocalypse!

There were about 2,500 surgical abortions performed on a typical day in the US before the 2016 election (and if you add abortions caused by abortifacient drugs, the number of abortions performed under color of law is likely in the many tens of thousands a day. I supported FReeper EternalVigilance for President in 2016 (and 2012 too) because none of the D or R candidates seem to think that a President has the obligation to use every lawful power he or she has to support and defend the Constitution, including that part that says no person shall be deprived of their life without due process.

With ever editorial Mr. Will is screaming, 'Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain! I am the Great and All Powerful OZ!'

* * * There's a new OZ in town.

He won a Pulitzer Prize in 1977. Since then, forty years in the desert, striving without much success to capture the attentions of the beltway cognoscenti.

"George Will: As irrelevant as he is eloquent!"

Will is anything but eloquent. Eloquent is defined as "fluent or persuasive". He is neither. He fills his writings with uncommon, ambiguous words, irrelevant to most readers. That's hardly persuasive, and certainly not fluent. He must think it will cause people to believe him to be intellectual. In fact, it makes him effete.

Effete: ineffectual · over-refined · artificial · studied · pretentious · flowery · used to describe an animal no longer capable of producing offspring.

No that is wonderful!! In many ways, he has been more conservative than Reagan. But he has never been a free marketeer and I fear it is going to spoil all of the good work .

Does “free trade” mean unilateral or bilateral free trade, in your definition?

Have never been a fan of George Will. Projects an air of superiority with very little substance. Great writer, but he should stick to waxing poetic about baseball.

Knows nothing about how the world works, only how he thinks it should work.

Has George Will ever had a real job; you know, one where he actually produced a service or product of value to the common man?

You are being more polite than my knee-jerk response last night. Thanks, it is more than I deserve.

I'm old school. I believe in FREE trade. As in, the government has no business in it. If you want to sell MortMan products to a buyer in Slobovia, that is between you & the buyer. If the Slobovian government wants to interfere, that is their problem. If the USA "penalizes" them by taxing your Slobovian returns, they are only hurting you.

NAFTA is NOT "free trade". It is managed trade. AKA socialism.

I'm gonna' get flamed, but the worst "tariffs" are sanctions. They drove the Japs to Pearl Harbor & the Iranian sanctions are senseless & will drive oil prices up way worse than anything OPEC is planning.

Thanks for the nice reply.

The people that commit this sin will stand before The Allmighty to answer to Him. It’s horrific that this issue is considered to be to the Republicans what gun control is to Democrats, i.e., a losing issue, political suicide. It took generations to corrupt and devolve our culture into one where so many do not respect the lives of the unborn. It will take generations to set it right again. But it’s damn sure time we got started on it. This is a war for the very soul of America.
