These Harvard kids got the lesson of their life in the Heartland
The NY Post ^ | June 16,2018 | By Salena Zito

On a blustery afternoon in April, I filed into a van along with 10 students from Harvard. We had just spent the last two days in Chicopee, Mass., where we had chatted with the police chief and his force, the mayor and his staff, small-business owners, waitresses and firemen about their struggles living in small-town America.

The undergrads were buzzing with their impressions. Chicopee is about 90 miles west of their prestigious university in Cambridge, but when it comes to shared experience, it might as well have been 1,000 light years away.

As they settled in, I looked at them.

“So,” I said, “who do you think most of the people you just got to know voted for president?”

None of the students had an answer. It hadn’t come up in their conversations and they didn’t know I had privately asked each person who they’d voted for.

So, I let a minute pass and told them.

“Nearly every one of them voted for Trump.”

My students looked stunned, at first. But then a recognition crossed their faces.

We were only a few days into a new course I had developed with Harvard’s Institute of Politics, called the Main Street Project, where students are immersed in small-town America. Even though these kids had almost all been raised in the United States, our journey sometimes felt like an anthropology course, as though they were seeing the rest of the country for the first time. And this was their opening lesson.

I have been a national political journalist for nearly 15 years. Whenever and wherever I travel in this country, I abide by a few simple rules: No planes, no interstates and no hotels.

And definitely no chain restaurants.

Very true.

Growing up in a small town, everyone rich and poor got along because we went to the same schools and had similar experiences growing up.

The best thing for these Harvard kids would be to get out into fly over country and spend a couple of years outside of the bubble. It would be their most valuable education they could get.

Generally, people do it because the homes are sometimes spectacularly beautiful with gorgeous gardens. We used to do it when married couples ran them - they had good food, game rooms, magazines and books. Then the gays got involved and while the homes were nice, you had to put up with their attitudes and peculiar ideas of decorating (often making Victorian houses look like the interior of a 19th century funeral parlor). I also got tired of the egg casseroles which became the go-to cheap breakfast for which you paid a lot of money.

I once stayed at a pretty b&b around Bucks County that was run by the female equivalent of Basil Fawlty!

Most of these elites have never done a hard days work ever.

***************

Physical work is good for the soul and gives you a sense of accomplishment. At least that’s how it felt yesterday after doing a lot of yard work. I slept well last night. :)

I would fail the course before I stayed in a motel 6.

The one time I stayed at a Motel 6 (many years ago) I recall hearing what sounded like a pimp screaming at his girl all night through the paper-thin walls.

Never again. 3 stars, absolute minimum (preferably 4 or 5).

You both missed the point. One does not have to go very far from the liberal enclaves of both coasts to be in a different world. A trip to Iowa or Nebraska is not required. Go listen to VDH talk about the disparity just within the state of California.

Absolutely!

Her famous comment about taking Trump seriously but not literally was the most cogent observation in years.

They ned to throw those kids in the deep end of the pool, now. PA and OH aren’t far enough.

Toss them into rural Missouri, Kansas, Alabama and Oklahoma.

First and foremost, the problem is Harvard, not the heartland

I would add that nowhere in Massachusetts can be considered the heartland. These idiots went to the zoo and think they’ve been to Africa.

Merrimack- Webster Dictionary:
Wealth: Abundance of valuable material possessions
Fortune: Prosperity obtained partly through luck
A store of material possessions
A very large sum of money
I can play your game of semantics as long as you want.

“What a bunch of lamo punks. These kids will crawl back into their bubble, assume a fetal position and suck their thumbs for the rest of their lives.”

Wait til someone they know is raped/slice and diced/tortured by some muzzy yelling Alahu Akbar and then ask for their viewpoint....

If U have not had your head being bashed on the concrete and surrounded by “the Enemy”, I think you are short on knowledge re the subject...Just one guy’s past talking here...

You just lost! Whenever you have to resort to name calling you might as well be in a grade school playground. I though this might have interesting,
