'When has it ever become legal to shoot someone because they’re pulling off in your car?'

Janique Walker knows the cost of a split second.

Her younger brother, 17-year-old Charles Macklin, was killed while trying to steal a Jeep from a Chicago fire lieutenant on the West Side last August. The lieutenant had left the Jeep running, and Macklin jumped behind the wheel.

The lieutenant ran in front of the Jeep and shouted, “Get out,” according to a police report. When Macklin began pulling away, the lieutenant drew his gun and fired through the open driver’s side window, hitting the teen in the chest.

Macklin’s last words were, “Sorry, bro,” according to the police report. The teen died on the pavement. He did not have a gun on him.

The lieutenant had a concealed carry license. He was not charged and he was not disciplined by the department, according to spokesman Larry Langford.

“That was investigated by us, and we found no violation of any rules,” Langford said. “The police didn’t arrest, the state’s attorney found no reason to charge. There was no wrongdoing as far as the Fire Department is concerned.”

Walker, 20, has organized protests, started a Facebook page and launched a hashtag on Twitter. She says she hasn’t given up hope of getting justice for her brother.

She believes her brother was found guilty by one man with a gun. Walker said her brother should be alive to stand before a judge and take responsibility for his actions.

“When has it ever become legal to shoot someone because they’re pulling off in your car?” she asked. “Even if (Macklin) did that, if he did steal the car. You’ve got insurance

But Pooky was going back to school

Pooky learned everything from playing Grand Theft Auto. You steal a car, go for a joy ride, Wreck the car, then push the reset button.

“...an awful lot of people seem to have no problem in putting their life into jeopardy...”

It goes with that “poor decision making skills, low impulse control” thing.

“Later in the story, she describes her brother as a “little boy”. “

“Forever young,” now.

First their pulling off in your car.

Then they’re pulling off over your pre-teen daughter’s bed at 2am.

Seems like that fire-fighter did everyone a favor.

A friend of mine in high school used to say that the tree jumped out in front of him.

“she hasn’t given up hope of getting justice for her brother”

But, but but, his last name is MACKLIN and hers is WALKER! Just wondering if there are other “siblings” and what their last names are. It’s just amazing to me what with all the shootings like this, why the “reasons for same” don’t sink in with the Black yutes?

"I believe he got just that already."

Instant rehabilitation is a beautiful thing. Just think of all the money saved on lawyer fees and cost of incarceration.

"Having your car stolen because you parked it with the keys in it and left it running is very irritating, but is not justifiable homicide."

Clearly you've never lived in Texas. There its perfectly legal to shoot someone if you see them making off with your neighbors TV as long as they asked you to keep an eye on their place while they were out.

Logic would tell you that if the carjacker was driving away he would not have been shot in the chest.

“Well, he fired through the driver’s side window, which would be hard to do if one were in front of a car.”

I suspect he fired after jumping out of the path of the oncoming vehicle. Said vehicle was being used as a deadly weapon, which completely justified the shooting. I just hope he didn’t do any damage to his Jeep other than the need to clean up the blood. And yeah, the death is sad, but it is reality today. Gone are the days when skin color got you a pass when you try to kill someone.

200 years ago petty criminals would be publicly tortured. If they did something serious, like steal from a church, they would be drowned or strangled.
