'When has it ever become legal to shoot someone because they’re pulling off in your car?'
The Chicago Tribune ^ | 06/15/18 | Katherine Rosenberg-Douglas

Janique Walker knows the cost of a split second.

Her younger brother, 17-year-old Charles Macklin, was killed while trying to steal a Jeep from a Chicago fire lieutenant on the West Side last August. The lieutenant had left the Jeep running, and Macklin jumped behind the wheel.

The lieutenant ran in front of the Jeep and shouted, “Get out,” according to a police report. When Macklin began pulling away, the lieutenant drew his gun and fired through the open driver’s side window, hitting the teen in the chest.

Macklin’s last words were, “Sorry, bro,” according to the police report. The teen died on the pavement. He did not have a gun on him.

The lieutenant had a concealed carry license. He was not charged and he was not disciplined by the department, according to spokesman Larry Langford.

“That was investigated by us, and we found no violation of any rules,” Langford said. “The police didn’t arrest, the state’s attorney found no reason to charge. There was no wrongdoing as far as the Fire Department is concerned.”

Walker, 20, has organized protests, started a Facebook page and launched a hashtag on Twitter. She says she hasn’t given up hope of getting justice for her brother.

She believes her brother was found guilty by one man with a gun. Walker said her brother should be alive to stand before a judge and take responsibility for his actions.

“When has it ever become legal to shoot someone because they’re pulling off in your car?” she asked. “Even if (Macklin) did that, if he did steal the car. You’ve got insurance

A minor detail missing from the story: The lieutenant fired his weapon at the teen, who was trying to run him over with the vehicle, authorities said.

I'm sure failing to mention that the thug was trying to murder the lieutenant was simply an oversight on the part of the author...right?

Gee—All of a sudden I’m supposed to feel sorry for a thug thief?

Only my two cents, but it seems like today, that an awful lot of people seem to have no problem in putting their life into jeopardy, and having it end tonight because they wanted to steal a car or break into a house.

The Lieutenant didn’t put the price tag on the jeep.

Well, he fired through the driver’s side window, which would be hard to do if one were in front of a car.

I think the basic message is correct. Having your car stolen because you parked it with the keys in it and left it running is very irritating, but is not justifiable homicide.

“simply an oversight on the part of the author...right? “

Like yelling “fire” in a crowded theater. She should be held responsible for any consequences.

We used to hang horse thieves. This was in recognition of the great cost and necessity of good transportation, and the need to highly discourage the behavior.

It used to be legal, or at least customary, to hang horse thieves.
I’m good with shooting car thieves who are caught in the act and don’t surrender.

The sister’s attitude of “What’s the big deal, the insurance will take care of it” is telling.

Exactly!

Before reading past the headline, my response was “When the thief is trying to run you over.”

Sorry bout your luck, insurance doesn’t cover the deductible.

In Chicago you must offer a carjacker a tank of gas too.

I get the feeling the author thinks the only time you have the right to use deadly force is if the other person is armed with a gun. A two ton vehicle can do a lot of damage as well.

And besides, one of the foundations upon which this country was built was individual property rights. You take someone else’s property at risk of losing your life, justifiably so.

“Even if (Macklin) did that, if he did steal the car. You’ve got insurance"

There's just so much going on in that thought.

The kid was in the car, driving it, trying to run down the owner, refusing to stop when the owner yelled "Get out!' -- and this becomes the thought: "if he did steal the car". Not much of an "if", really.

"You've got insurance". That means I can just take all your stuff. Here's the deal, see -- you work hard, you sacrifice, you earn money, you buy stuff. And then I'll just take your stuff. Because, you know, "You've got insurance."

Ghetto culture is bad. That community needs to fix itself.
