College Students Suing Over Free Speech Get a Powerful Ally: The Trump Administration
Wall Street Journal ^ | June 13, 2018 | Sadie Gurman and Michelle Hackman

The Trump administration is using its legal muscle to aid college students who say their free-speech rights have been violated on campus, diving into a politically charged battle over whether school discipline and safety policies are hindering expression.

Under Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who has decried colleges for becoming “echo chamber of political correctness,” the Justice Department has been inserting itself into lawsuits on behalf of students who say their views are silenced when administrators restrict where they can protest or who can speak on campus.

In recent months, the Justice Department has sided with conservative student groups suing the University of California, Berkeley over the school’s policies regarding guest speakers, and with a student who sued Pierce College in Los Angeles over its restrictions on where he could distribute Spanish-language copies of the U.S. Constitution. This week, the Justice Department aligned itself with a group in a lawsuit against the University of Michigan over its conduct code.

The effort reflects an assertive role the Trump administration has taken in promoting conservative social priorities across agencies, transforming policy on sensitive issues such as immigration, reproductive health, gay rights and religious freedom. The Department of Health and Human Services, for example, created a new division in its Office for Civil Rights to field complaints of religious discrimination in health care. The Education Department rolled back Obama-era policies on campus sexual assault and transgender bathroom access.

Trump critics say the administration is aggressively seeking out divisive issues to curry favor with its conservative and religious base. But administration officials argue they are intervening to protect rights of individuals whose concerns have long been ignored, noting that Obama officials made similar moves to further their own, left-leaning positions.

That a way, Sessions! Go after the big crimes — like PC on campuses!

Good! It’s time to actually uphold the Bill of Rights. That means:

1) all speech codes everywhere- especially university campuses need to be struck down.

2) all university codes that deny men substantive due process when a rape allegation is made need to be struck down.

Those first two to be backed up by the immediate cut off of ALL federal funds including research grants and student loans if they do not IMMEDIATELY comply.

3. All the various infringements on Americans’ 2nd amendment rights must be struck down - this includes any and all bans on any semiautomatic rifles or pistols, restrictions on magazine size, every state MUST be a shall issue state for ccw licenses, nationwide reciprocity for ccw license holders, abolition of “gun free zones” except for banks and courthouses and airports (where there is security already).

If you told someone in the 60s that campus free speech would one day be called a “conservative social priority”...

Also, if you need a reminder of how far to the left the WSJ news page remains, check out the new euphemism for abortion, “reproductive health.” I guess that is better than just “healthcare,” like it was a few years ago.

I have no problem with the DOJ doing this. This is actually the root of the problem. Too many people go through college thinking they can tell other people how to think or not to think.

I agree with you...the utterly ridiculous things we have seen on campuses the past ten years are indeed the root of a lot of our problems. But, the DOJ has limited resoureces and it would be nice they were being seriously deployed first and foremost against the deeply embedded, vile corruption that is Washington, DC.

Big picture — going after PC on campuses is good, but it is distraction from the real war being waged on us by the perpetual state. Sessions shouldn’t split his army.

The DoJ is a Yuge part of The Swamp.

That Sessions has actually repurposed a small part of it is good news.

In my estimation PC on campuses definitely qualifies as big crime! Universities should not rake in huge sums to teach leftist views to students, it is fraud among other things.

On the Right and on the Left, hatred diminishes reason.

The only way to judge this story as bad news would be if you hate Sessions as much as liberal College admins hate Freedom.

Regardless what people feel or believe about the pace and depth of prosecutions for political crimes already committed and perps who aren’t going anywhere in the meantime... DOJeff is an every-day, all-the-way policy-level machine. In a good way. A VERY good way.

Not only is he fearlessly accomplishing Trump’s number one priority/promise regarding immigration in ways which we would have thought politically impossible 2 yrs ago. He is also, every day, establishing and/or correcting fed level policies which protect we individual Americans from being consumed by political correctness - the root swamp, without which the DC swamp cannot survive.

We need to get fedgov out of all college level education. These ridiculous PC problems started when fedgov pouring hundreds of billions into college funding and taking over the college loan system. Just look at the kook radical feminist yesterday who wrote about “dog rape culture” — I’d wager 100 to 1 that fedgov paid for her stupid “work.”

The way to fix the problem is to get to the root of it — fedgov money. Pruning a few leaves here and there won’t stop the spread.

“I like Jeff Sesssions too.”

If we pin those ears back, I think his mug could be squeezed in between TR and Lincoln.

I assume the space next to Abe’s left cheek is where Trump will be chiseled. It’s the only spot which has enough boulders above for the hairdo of the prez who has the biggest boulders below.

I am nominating you for the You Done Said a Mouthful award, fedgov money may not be the root of ALL evil but it’s close enough for government work.

Enough lawsuits could put the commies in academia out of business.

But then leftists have to destroy any good institution before they can seize complete power.

BAN LEFTISTS - IT WILL SAVE TIME
