Blue State Rejects Free Electricity To Avoid Seeing A Wind Farm
Hot Air ^ | June 12,2018 | Jazz Shaw

Put out the NIMBY alert for Maryland. This very blue state is, of course, largely onboard with the entire “keep it in the ground” movement to abandon fossil fuels and embrace renewable energy. Unless, of course, you want to generate any of that electricity within sight of the state’s tony coastal communities. In Ocean City, Maryland, an energy company called U.S. Wind has plans in place to develop the second largest wind farm in the country offshore there, taking advantage of the almost constant breezes which blow in off the Atlantic. The amount of renewable electricity it would generate would be impressive indeed.

There’s just one problem. The locals don’t want any wind turbines within thirty miles of the coast for fear that it might obstruct the view and cut into tourism. U.S. Wind tried to tempt them by offering to invest hundreds of thousands of dollars into other community development projects as an incentive. The locals said no. The company offered to build in a guarantee that they would cover any unanticipated cost overruns so Ocean City wouldn’t be stuck with the tab. The natives still wouldn’t relent. The final offer was truly incredible. The developers offered to provide Ocean City with free electricity for the life of the wind farm.

I have a ‘Ocean City’ fishing reel that was made in the 1950’s. It still works perfectly and I use it for salmon fishing.

Don’t worry, they’d vote to protect the views from your beach front properties AND your cottage in the Hamptons.

Free energy? Doesn’t exist? Since when are windmills cost free and maintenance free?

Not that I think this would be a good idea but what “views” are being obstructed? It isn’t like putting windmills in front of beautiful mountains like in the West.

Unless, of course, you want to generate any of that electricity within sight of the state’s tony coastal communities.

EPA and others fail to talk about the downside of wind turbines. They only work when there is wind. They destroy birds and bats. They are not economically viable. No one wants to study the aesthetic pollution caused by the large, ugly wind turbines.

With all the money wasted on solar projects that are not economically viable, one could really work on making fossil fuels environmental friendly, do you not agree?

Fossil fuels are solar energy put in the bank many years ago. They work 24/7.

At 30 miles distance, only the portion of the structure above 595 feet would be visible due to the curvature sightline. The SeaTitan™ 10MW wind turbine designed by American energy technologies company AMSC is currently the biggest wind turbine in the world.

The direct-drive turbine, with 190m (623 ft) rotor diameter, has a rated power capacity of 10MW and hub height of 125m (410 ft). Thus the max height is the radius (312') plus the hub height (410') equaling 722 ft. which would be visible for about 34 mile distance.

There is nothing free about wind or solar, just ask the Germans.

Just because we live in Maryland, do not assume that Ocean City is all full of liberals. We have a Republican Congressman and the Eastern Shore is generally conservative. This is a case of the Western Shore (libs) pushing something that the Eastern Shore (conservatives) don’t want. Heck we don’t even have a recycling program in Ocean City.

My understanding is that the majority of the turbines will be closer than 30 miles.

Actually, I hope so. I don’t care about the “clean” energy. I just want to be able to fish around them on my boat. Any structure will bring fish.

I’ve lived in Maryland for nine years and besides a quick drive through on a business trip haven’t made the holy haj pilgrimage to Ocean City.

Beaches do absolutely nothing for me and beach town tourist traps even less.

But, in this case, I wholly agree. Whether it’s for the NIMBY view or for actual economic literacy, wind farms are a horrible idea.

The energy cost of extracting, refining, processing, and manufacturing a Windmill will NEVER be recovered in the lifetime of the device.

Nukes are the only real green energy.

They destroy birds and bats

True, but only a tiny fraction compared to the birds and bats who die due to starvation, due to disease brought on by a malnourished state, and those sho fall prey to predators because they are underfed and hunger makes them careless. Birds and bats (like the rest of nature) overbreed past the capacity of their food supply. At the end of the day windmills just elevate the skill of "noticing that giant metal blade" to be of equal importance to the "see bugs far away", "notice hawks and owls" and fly faster than the other bats and birds " skills on the tree of survival traits. The total bat and bird population will be unchanged, as it still hinges mostly on how much food grows. The other concerns were legitimate.

The windmill farms along the Columbia River, east of Portland, primarily on the Washington state side, are a blight on the landscape.
