Russia and China are the biggest defenders of Iran Nuke and Paris Climate. The false distinctions need to stop. We have very few true allies, but our truest ones are the underdog countries of the former Soviet space and Eastern bloc: Poland, Romania, and the Batlics. We are battling Merkel and ilk for leadership of the Western world and it is not a fight we should give up.

“Russia should reenter the G8. It is in everyone’s best interests.”

Call it a "professional courtesy."

Think the media had their ‘Trump tariff’ stories written and ready to publish as of Thursday night, probably had experts (i.e. other idiot journalists) ready to be interviewed.

Friday morning, Trump pulls the rug out from under the journalists and makes the story about whether or not Russia should be in the G8!

Yeah I don’t have a problem with this. Shutting leaders out of talks is childish.

Its a form of trying to shame someone....in Putin's case it would have never worked. He's sorta like Trump in that way.you put an obstacle in front of him and he's simply 'challenged' to work around it...and Putin did just that.

Russia, China, and India....England , France ...

I thought when the EU got together the UN Security Council seat for England and France should have been made the EU seat and then a seat for India. The largest democracy in the world and no permanent seat at the table.

Moral and historical ties. That is what binds true friends and wins real wars. Not some amoral and agnostic “REALPOLITIK.”

When history looks back, this will be seen as the defining speech of President Trump’s presidency. It was his “Western Civilization” speech delivered by no accident in Warsaw to the people of Poland.

Your outlook may reap tactical benefits, but not strategic. Those who achieve true excellence in diplomacy are able to see beyond immediate advantages, and risk temporary costs for greater long term returns. Just look at Jesus Christ and the early Christian movement.

On a lesser note, this trade war is a good thing.

And we do have a lot to gain by building meaningful friendships with countries from the Eastern Bloc. You act like Poland is some desert island. The Baltics are small but incredibly resourceful and booming in the tech sector. Ukraine was the bread basket of Europe before the Soviets starved it.

things like being a part of this group really are not hinged on what good or bad thing they are doing but on the economical impact the country has on the world and there influence on other countries... China Russia India are the biggest players and other countries tend to align and take there lead on international issues….the other four countries Brittan , France Italy and Germany all were in that category till the 1970s unfortunately the reality of the changes caused by world war one and two over took the world stage in the 1970 and they just are not as important.

It is not just about economics: ideology, history, cultural/religious ties, and identity are crucial too.

Well there is quite a distinction between Poland and the Baltics. As for Ukraine....little has changed just different leaders and it still remains a debtor nation.

That’s right, keep your friends close, but your enemies even closer.

I see no downside to allowing Russia in.

I’m more outraged at Turkey still being in NATO than I would be at Russia being in the G8.
