Trump says he is likely to support ending federal ban on marijuana
The Los Angeles Times ^ | June 8th, 2018 | By Evan Halper

President Trump said he likely will support a congressional effort to end the federal ban on marijuana, a major step that would reshape the pot industry and end the threat of a Justice Department crackdown.

Trump’s remarks put him sharply at odds with Atty. Gen. Jeff Sessions on the issue. The bill in question, pushed by a bipartisan coalition, would allow states to go forward with legalization unencumbered by threats of federal prosecution.

Trump made his comments to a gaggle of reporters Friday morning just before he boarded a helicopter on his way to the G-7 summit in Canada. His remarks came the day after the bipartisan group of lawmakers proposed their measure.

One of the lead sponsors is Sen. Cory Gardner (R-Colo.), who is aligned with Trump on several issues but recently has tangled with the administration over the Justice Department’s threatened crackdowns on marijuana.

“I support Sen. Gardner,” Trump said when asked about the bill. “I know exactly what he’s doing. We’re looking at it. But I probably will end up supporting that, yes.”

I’m only a conservative for the constitutional freedom. Those docs ARE our country. I don’t want only my choices or lifestyle to be allowed.

Pot is not a gateway drug. The only reason most people who smoke pot move on to other drugs is because of the environment in which they have to purchase it and our education system and government propaganda has a lot to do with it.
Drug dealers are in business to make money. If a kid goes to a drug dealer to buy weed, the drug dealer will try to sell him something harder if he has it. The child being told his entire life that pot and heroin are equally bad won’t know the difference. There’s your gateway.
And before anybody gets on here and denounces me and tells me I’m full of s***, I have lived the life. I have seen the tricks that drug dealers pull to get people hooked on hard drugs so they can make more money.
I have also seen more lives destroyed by prescription drugs obtained legally from their doctor and pharmacist.
Fortunately for me, I had older brothers who were pot smokers and had warned me about drug dealers and about hard drugs, such as prescription pills, heroin and Coke.
And if you’re worried about kids dying from a drug overdose lock up your medicine cabinet.
The only damage pot has ever done to me is to my waistline and my grocery bill.

Bad move, Mr. President.

No, it's the smart move. The federal government's war on pot is an unmitigated failure, just as it was against alcohol.

Using the power of the federal government to force a change in human behavior is not just wrong - it does not work.

This is an issue best left to the states and to the people.

It’s not so much that something is being legalized rather a law making it illegal is just being struck down making it a personal choice issue. In this case in a personal choice for each state.

By the way my local town just went Wet after being dry since prohibition.

I am witnessing it right now with a family we know whose two kids are deep into the pot culture because it has been celebrated in the liberal cesspool state that I reside in (for now). It is doing nothing but destroying their ambition, potential and lives by using this “legal” drug on a regular basis.

Over the years I have seen so many family, friends, acquaintances, and dozens of people I responded to on medical calls whose lives had been ravaged by marijuana use. Yet we have numerous trolls here who extol the virtues of marijuana and try to minimize the damage that it does to peoples’ lives. They even have the audacity to portray it as a some type of freedom issue. It is incredible.

Not only do I think President Trump is right, but I think the government should control it.

“I’m passionate about this because I believe there isn’t one benefit to legalizing it. We will just disagree on the legalization aspect because I strongly believe it takes the stigma off using an incredibly harmful chemical compound (THC), legitimizes it and is further destroying the fabric of American society.”

That was precisely the argument of the Temperance movement at the turn of the last century.

And, ironically, they were right. Alcohol has been a scourge on society.

But it has been far less harmful than the fruit of prohibition.

“It is incredible. “

What is incredible is otherwise conservative people seeking to further empower the state, with surveillance, military equipment, asset forfeiture and no-knock raids resulting in murder of innocents.

Those are the so-called conservatives which should be ridiculed.

Ravaged by marijuana use? Ludicrous.

I would rather they focus on heroine, meth, cocaine and OPIOIDS. Those are the drugs destroying communities.

Ravaged by marijuana use? Ludicrous.

I started out thinking just like you. But I spent 25 years in the field and saw the problems first hand day after day. I like numerous emergency room doctors and nurses that I worked with found out the truth.

People who eat too much candy and fast food, use tobacco products, drink too much alcohol or use crack cocaine, meth or heroin will almost all admit that what they are doing is bad for them. It is only marijuana users who typically insist that it does not causes them or anyone else any harm. This is despite numerous studies that prove all sorts of negative effects from memory problems to severe psychological issues to unsafe driving to severe vascular problems.

If you are a heavy marijuana user I can name half a dozen problems that you are most likely suffering from but will not admit Marijuana is causing. Marijuana is a scourge to individuals, kids and young adults especially but it is also a scourge to our society. You are a fool who will continue believing what you want to until the day you die. But don't push your nonsense on others. That is not nice.
