Trump says he is likely to support ending federal ban on marijuana
The Los Angeles Times ^ | June 8th, 2018 | By Evan Halper

President Trump said he likely will support a congressional effort to end the federal ban on marijuana, a major step that would reshape the pot industry and end the threat of a Justice Department crackdown.

Trump’s remarks put him sharply at odds with Atty. Gen. Jeff Sessions on the issue. The bill in question, pushed by a bipartisan coalition, would allow states to go forward with legalization unencumbered by threats of federal prosecution.

Trump made his comments to a gaggle of reporters Friday morning just before he boarded a helicopter on his way to the G-7 summit in Canada. His remarks came the day after the bipartisan group of lawmakers proposed their measure.

One of the lead sponsors is Sen. Cory Gardner (R-Colo.), who is aligned with Trump on several issues but recently has tangled with the administration over the Justice Department’s threatened crackdowns on marijuana.

“I support Sen. Gardner,” Trump said when asked about the bill. “I know exactly what he’s doing. We’re looking at it. But I probably will end up supporting that, yes.”

How can one justify a ‘war’ against a natural substance placed here by our creator for our healing?

Typical human absurdity.

The problem has been that some states legalized the use without legalizing the sale. That’s a recipe for disaster. You create an immense demand that can only be filled by illegal means.

A liberal doesn’t believe one should smoke marijuana, so they try to pass a law so that nobody can smoke dope.

Except that doesn't ring true...do you know any liberal, anywhere who believes that?

Tobacco? It aids in digestion.

I’m sure business owners are really happy about trusting their business to users.

Businesses will remain free to drug test.

“It’s no laughing matter.”

I like living on the edge. In fact, I’ll pop a placebo + dihydrogen monoxide cocktail and frigging DRIVE through school zones and kitten farms at 15MPH!!!!

Marijuana advocates have successfully lied about the drug, its dangers and its history.

Then there is this video EVERYONE here should see:

Those of us who spent decades treating marijuana users know that the reality is much darker than what is portrayed.

Kinda like alcohol users?

I know nurses have seen first hand what riding a motorcycle can do. It’s “dark” as well. They call them “organ donors”.

I still think motorcycles should be legal to ride.

"You can’t build a republic with potheads as your citizenry."

No doubt about it.

I would also include everybody that engages in recreational chemistry of any kind (alcohol, paint fumes, khat, etc).

I think he should do it sooner, rather than later, to help with the midterms.

Technically, the 14th amendment ended “states rights” by placing the states under all of the provisions of the first ten amendments.

Those provisions still leave the states plenty of rights - in particular, they do not mandate marijuana criminalization at either the federal or the state level.

Military aircraft users?

What can we leave off the list?

Like I said, pot is far less harmful than many other things. Note I said “less harmful” not harmless.

The articles you cite really don’t put the issue in proper context.

Cars can be very harmful, once introduced in society there has been a spike in traffic deaths — so should we ban cars?

The internet can be very addicting too, should we ban that?

Sex can have unwanted consequences, should we ban that?

Too much sugar and candy can kill you too, ban that?

Point is that people do stupid things and get addicted to practically anything.

IMHO, Pot falls into that category of it is stupid if you overuse and it greatly impairs
your ability to live responsibly — as MANY OTHER THINGS AS I MENTIONED ABOVE CAN DO TOO!

Like someone who can drink a beer and have a glass of wine once in a while, pot can also fall into that sphere of use.

Herion, meth, cociane and such substances are a completely different category of stupid — those substances should be heavily pursued by law enforcement — not too many casual users of those poisons.

Pot is nowhere near that category of stupid.

God Bless.

So "abhorrence" overrides Constitutional limitations?

To that I would respond, does the Constitution limit your adherence to morality, your duty to God, or your ability to determine right from wrong? If you are not just trying to bait me, I would answer that there are a great many things we have done as a nation, as a beacon of freedom and hope for a disadvantaged world, that were not defined in the constitution. For a forum as educated as this one is, I don't think I need to list specifics.

I was at a friend’s party, about 20 years ago. He was a second level manager at Microsoft at the time. I was looking for him at one point but couldn’t find him. Then I saw him coming out of his landscaped bushes on the side of the yard carrying a bong. He said he knew how I felt about dope and didn’t want me to know he was doing it. I told him I didn’t care. It was a personal preference thing.

He’s still doing fine. And I enjoy a bourbon and a cigar every now and then.

I spend more time there than I want, and I see a huge difference. What's more, you won't see the real effect for another ten, fifteen years.

IMO, those who think legalization is not even a close call...don't understand the issue.

There are plenty of potheads in Seattle, many educated and employed. Their decision making will be impaired, it couldn't be otherwise. But there's a basis for saying live and let live.

They don't create the social costs.

It's the poor who do. They have no private safety net, only public. And the costs will be huge. They will be borne, by definition, by those of us who do not smell like skunk.

What changes are you proposing for OTJ drug testing?

One for sure was a cigarette smoker, but no they didn’t break into the liquor cabinet. Their parents were not drinkers, even socially. That is not to say they never drank. One is a total rebel, but one, when not under the influence is a kind and gentle person, his preferred drug at the beginning was weed. Its a small town and you hear things about your relatives.

My small town was Mayberry like growing up in the 1970’s. You walked the downtown by yourself as a kid, you rode bikes to Little League games or the YMCA swimming pool with no adults accompanying you. But you knew where the booze, drugs and prostitution was, but rarely did you see any evidence of it in public, ever, it was not allowed.

About six or seven years ago a suboxone clinic opened in town and now we have homeless roaming the streets 24/7, breaking into homes and businesses. My Dad has thrown down on a couple of them who decided to enter his business and start prowling around the area where he stores supplies. You find syringes every where and whores openly walk the street and the cops and powers that be do nothing. I am living the small town version of San Francisco and Denver, it’s not pretty and getting worse. Legalized weed I fear will only be more gas on the fire.

It’s easy to grow yourself, if you can get seeds. I tried it in the early 70’s.

Frankly, my take on marijuana is as follows: Imagine that all it took to produce powerful Zoloft was to boil your lawn clippings in water for ten minutes.

Now imagine the government trying to make that illegal.

That is simply stupid and not something that would happen in a free country. Rather, the government would educate people as to why they shouldn’t do it and then let folks do what they want. Some would be “canaries in the coal mine” to those thinking about doing it.
